Women's Golf Finishes 11th at Big 12's
April 27, 2008 | Women's Golf
No. 14-ranked
Oklahoma State's Jaclyn Sweeney held on to her two-day lead with a five-over 77 and finished the tournament with a nine-over 225 to claim medalist honors. She was followed by fellow teammates Karin Kinnerud (229) and Amanda Johnson (230) to round out the top-three.
“We started out pretty well today and we were making a strong move forward,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “The last three holes of the front nine were very difficult, especially with the way that the wind was blowing and we had a hard time finishing strong, with the exception of (Lindsay) Senger. She played the last four holes to par where everyone else had trouble and she demonstrated really great golf there.”
Coming off a Saturday round of 82, lone Buff senior Lindsay Senger stuck to her round three game-plan and led the Buffs for the second-straight year at the Big 12 Tournament, finishing in a tie for 27th place. Even though she did not record any birdies, she played a team-high 13 holes to par with only five bogeys for a final-round score of 77 and finished with a 246 total.
“Lindsay absolutely stayed with her gameplan today,” said Kelly. “She has a little more experience than our other players dealing with Big 12 conditions and she stayed really tough and focused and knew how to stay patient and not get busted by a bogey.”
“I hit the ball pretty average today,” said Senger. “I didn't do anything great, but when I missed a shot I made bogey and tried to completely eliminate big holes today. It added up to five bogeys and no birdies and when I was in trouble I made sure to give myself a really good opportunity to make par. I only missed a few.”
Sophomore Dominique Pytlewski saw herself climb as high as 19th place and was one pace for the lowest third-round score at one-over through 14 holes. Pytlewski was two-under through the first six holes before carding a triple bogey toward the end of the back nine. She rebounded with her third birdie of the day on her 12th hole, but struggled with three double-bogeys and a triple on her last five holes, putting her at 11-over on the day (83) with a three-day total of 250, good for a tie for 38th.
“Domi was playing really well all day with three birdies through 12 holes, but she just ran into some problems coming home,” said Kelly.
“On a course like this you get penalized for not hitting narrow, perfect shots sometimes and with the wind blowing you have to be very precise where you want to hit it because if the wind takes it you're looking at bogey or double on a lot of holes,” said Pytlewski. “That's what happened with me towards the last five holes. I stayed calm and focused, but my shots were adding up and it got frustrating.”
Sophomore Christine Kim had played eight holes to par, but a pair of double-bogeys on the front nine pushed her back to a 12-over 84 on the day. She finished in 42nd place with a 251 total overall in her first-career post-season outing.
Freshman Stephanie Simich (225), despite three birdies in the final round, carded a trio of triple-bogeys on the front nine to keep her from jumping any higher in the individual standings and recorded a third-round score of 85, good for 45th place in the individual standings. Junior Cierra Ko wrapped up her first Big 12 tournament with a third-round 87, her tournament-low score, for a 270 total and a 57th place finish overall.
“Overall we had a run going today for awhile but let it slip away on the last few holes,” said Kelly. “Hopefully we'll learn from that and realize that we have to finish what we start especially on a course like that. It would have been nice to move up, but hopefully we'll use this experience to our advantage for next year because it doesn't feel good at all.”
“I think that Big 12's in general are usually set up very difficult and having some experience with that was good for me,” said Senger. “I have played in some pretty nasty weather in Big 12 Tournaments and everyone here hasn't exactly experienced what I have over my career. Hopefully they will learn from this and I am confident that they'll get better as well in these conditions from here on out.” e better as well from here on out.
The Buffaloes return all but Senger to the lineup next fall and welcome in three freshmen to the team for the 2008-09 season. The Buffs will boast another young, but more experienced line-up with only one senior in Cierra Ko, in what will be coach Anne Kelly's 12th season at
