Tennis Falls At Conference Semifinal

April 26, 2008 | Tennis

COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? The University of Colorado tennis team saw its Big 12 Conference tournament end in the semifinals, falling 4-0 to top seeded and No. 3 nationally ranked Baylor, Saturday afternoon at George P. Mitchell Tennis Center hosted by Texas A&M.

The Buffaloes (12-11), seeded No. 4 and ranked No. 58th nationally saw their five-match winning streak come to an end as well as its run for their first conference final in the 12-year history of the Big 12 Conference. Saturday's appearance in the semifinals was the fourth in school history having made the semis in 2005 (No. 6 seed), 2003 (No. 8), 1998 (No. 3).

Two-time defending champion Baylor improves to 27-2 and advances to Sunday's final for their fourth straight year.

The season may not be over as the CU women will find out on Tuesday, April 29 whether or not they will be one of 64 schools invited to the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship. The announcement will air between 12 and 12:30 p.m. (MT) on ESPNews. ESPNews is located on DirecTV Channel 207 and DishNetwork Channel 142. Additionally, the ESPNews audio signal will be available on the ESPNews channel on XM Radio and SIRIUS Radio.

On Saturday, the Bears proved to be too much for the Buffaloes taking the doubles point with a pair of nationally ranked tandems at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots, then taking the next three singles slots, all in straight sets by another trio of ranked players.

“We were disappointed, but the players really came out and worked hard,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “Baylor is a good team, so give credit to them. We were definitely hoping to keep them out here longer and extend the match for sure, but we are proud of our players.”
