Pifer and Barringer Run to Athlete of the Week Honors

BOULDER-- Distance runners Stephen Pifer (senior) and Jenny Barringer (junior) were named the University of Colorado's athletes of the week for the week of April 21-27.
Pifer, an Edwardsville, Ill. (Edwardsville) native, ran an NCAA regional qualifying time of 3:41.55 to edge out Gabe Jennings of Eugene Health's professional team who ran a 3:41.83 and earned a first place finish in the 1500m run. Pifer moved up to seventh on the national list. He ranks third in the region and second in the conference.
Barringer, an Oviedo, Fla. (Oviedo) native, set a personal record in the 1500m as she ran it in 4:17.19, the winning time was also a regional qualifying time. Barringer beat Nicole Blood of Oregon by nearly a second and a half (4:18.55) to claim the 1500m title. The mark is the eighth best in school history and made her the fifth-fastest woman in CU history in the event. It is the fastest time by a CU woman this season. It is also the fastest time in the conference, region and is the second best in the nation this year.
Other athletes nominated for this week's award were: Luke Symons (men's golf) and Lindsay Singer (women's golf).

Symons was Colorado's highest finisher in the Big 12 Conference Championships, tying for 28th with a 76-73-77-74:300 scorecard (12-over par). He had the most birdies by any Buff in the meet with 13 on the 7,470-yard, par-72 Whispering Pines Golf Club course, and was 6-under on the par 5s in the tournament, tied for third best. Colorado finished 10th as a team.
Women's Golf, Lindsay Senger, Senior, Louisville, Colo.
Senger battled back from two rounds in the 80's to card a team-low 77 in the third and final round of the 2008 Big 12 Women's Conference Tournament. She stuck to her game plan and led the Buffs for the second-straight year at the Big 12 tournament, finishing in a tie for 27th place. Even though she did not record any birdies, she played a team-high 13 holes to par with only five bogeys for a final-round score of 77 and finished with a 246 total.
