Women's Golf Drops to Seventh at UNM

ALBUQUERQUE - The University of Colorado women's golf team carded a second-round total of 302 and slipped into seventh place with one round to play in the UNM Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational here Friday.
Colorado shot 301 in the first round of action on Thursday, and came back with a second round 302 on day two, which was not enough to get them back in the hunt. Pepperdine and host New Mexico share the team lead with a 585 total, while Colorado is 18 strokes back at 603.
Freshman Emily Childs leads the Buffs in the individual standings, after improving six strokes and shooting a 69 in the second round. She opened with six birdies in the first 11 holes, putting her at six under with seven holes left to play. After a trio of bogeys, Childs wrapped up the second round with another birdie on No 17 and finished at four under. After contending for the top spot for a majority of the day, Childs finished in a tie for third place individually, three strokes out of the lead.
“Emily Childs played excellent today,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “She shot four under on this course and I think it's a difficult course. It was playing exceptionally hard on the back nine with some difficult pin locations, but she just played solid golf.”
“I was played well and was making a lot of birdies,” said Childs. “I got a little nervous after I was six under and got a couple of bogeys, but finally got it back at the end and I was happy with how I finished.”
Fellow freshman Emily Talley sits in a tie for 16th place at three-over (149) on the tournament. Talley struggled late in the round with three straight bogeys, but she battled back and finished with a birdie on the final hole of the day for a two-over 75 for the day.
“Talley played solid golf,” said Kelly. “She got into trouble a couple of times but she finds a way to fight her way back every time, which is pretty amazing.”
“I started off well, but then I ran into a string of bogeys,” said Talley. “I needed to step it up and I ended up finishing strong which is good, but other than that there is still a lot of work to be done tomorrow.”
Juniors Dominique Pytlewski and Christine Kim each carded a second round total of 80. Pytlewski is currently tied for 35th place overall, while Kim is in a tie for 61st. Junior Julie Kim wraps up the scoring for Colorado as she improved four strokes and carded a 78 in round two, for a two day total of 160, good for 64th overall.
“Julie (Kim) struggled on the front nine, but made a nice comeback on the back,” said Kelly. “Christine (Kim) birdied in on 17 and 18 and I think that she finally made a little adjustment towards the end that will help a lot.”
“Domi is extremely disappointed with that round, she could get a putt to drop,” said Kelly. “I know everybody on this team wants to shoot a low round tomorrow and move up.”
