Women's Golf Takes Sixth in New Mexico

September 20, 2008 | Women's Golf

ALBUQUERQUE ? The University of Colorado women's golf team improved one spot and finished in sixth place after shooting the team's tournament-best score of 296 in the final round at the UNM Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational here Saturday.

Host school New Mexico won the invitational with a combined three-round score of 872, a four stroke win over runner-up Pepperdine (876).  The top-two schools had a comfortable lead over the rest of the pack, as Pepperdine was followed by UNLV (889), UC Davis to round out the top-five.  Colorado finished with a three-round total of 899 (+22).

“I am proud of the team as a whole,” said head coach Anne Kelly.  “We made a good comeback today and moving up on the last day is always a good thing.”

Freshman Emily Childs (75-69-75?219) led the Buffaloes for the second-straight tournament, finishing even after three rounds in seventh place.  Her second round score of 69 proved to be a team-low on the weekend.

“I felt like this was a pretty good tournament for us,” said Childs.  “It could have been a lot better but I felt like I came in strong and I still want to do better next week.”

Childs was followed by freshman Emily Talley who shot her best round of the tournament on the final day, carding a one-under 72.  A trio of birdies and just two bogeys moved Talley up six spots in the standings as she finished in a tie for 10th place.

“I trusted myself a lot more today, which was what I needed to do,” said Talley.  “I birdied my first and last hole which was a good start and finish to the final round.”

Junior Dominique Pytlewski finished day three with her best round of the tournament, as she shaved eight strokes off her second-round score to card a one-under 72 on the final day.  Pytlewski was two-under through her first 17 holes, until shooting her only bogey of the round as she finished with a (73-80-72?225) scorecard, good for a tie for 22nd place.

“My first day I was even and I was happy with it because I didn't do anything special,” said Pytlewski.  “Yesterday I didn't make anything and today I just got into a good momentum around holes 13 and 14 which set me up well.  My putts were dropping and I felt more confident.”

“We definitely improved as a team today,” said Kelly.  “Domi made a great comeback after yesterday's round and proved what a great competitor she is.  She really is the anchor of this team.  Childs played solid golf and Talley played very well, making a clutch birdie on the last hole.”

Juniors Julie Kim (82-78-77?237) and Christine Kim (79-80-79?238) rounded out the scoring for the Buffaloes as they tied for 62nd and 68th place, respectively.

Jodi Ewart of New Mexico led the entire tournament and shot the best individual score out of the tournament's 89 golfers with a final score that was six under par (213).

“The good thing is that we have three or four people playing good golf right now, and everyone is confident that we can win and compete with a lot of other teams,” said Pytlewski.  “We are no going into tournaments to see how we can do, but rather we have an attitude that we can win and beat a lot of other teams.  We are disappointed that we were a few strokes behind where we wanted to be, but we'll get there.”

The Buffs will return to the course for their home tournament, the CU Heather Farr Memorial.  The tournament will tee off on Monday, Sept. 29 with 36 holes at the Omni Interlocken Golf Course in Broomfield.  On Tuesday, Sept. 30 they will play the final 18 holes.

“Both freshman for the first two tournaments have come in and made a big difference and a huge impact on this team,” said Kelly.  “We didn't even play to our best and I think that everyone is realizing that we can be a pretty special team.  Having the potential and doing are two different things, but the possibility is definitely there.”
