Women's Golf Second in Heather Farr

BROOMFIELD ? The University of Colorado women's golf team stands in second place after two rounds of the CU Heather Farr Memorial here Monday.

Notre Dame leads the tournament with a two-round score of 569.  Colorado, after shooting the best first round score (286), is eight strokes back in second place.  They are followed by CSU Long Beach (581), Texas Tech (582) and Colorado State (584) to round out the top-five.

“Our team played some solid golf in the morning round,” said head coach Anne Kelly.  “Having Domi (Pytlewski) and Emily (Childs) shoot 68 was a great way to start off the tournament.  We made a lot of birdies today as a team, but we also made a lot of bogeys and we need to eliminate more of those tomorrow.”

Freshman Emily Childs paced the Buffaloes on day one with a 68-70?138 and sits in third place individually, just two strokes out of the lead.  Childs opened the tournament with a four-under 68 and led the field with eight birdies.  In the second round, she was one-over on the front nine, but managed to turn things around after her only bogey on the back nine and carded three-straight birdies and a par to close out the afternoon two under (70).

“I think that since we have practiced on this course a lot in the past month, it was easier to read the greens, but this course is honestly tough no matter who plays on it,” said Childs.

Junior Dominique Pytlewski matched Childs in the morning round with a career-low 68 (four-under), breaking her previous low of 69, which she shot earlier this month at the CSU Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic.  Pytlewski recorded a trio of birdies in her first round on the front nine and after a bogey on hole 10, she bounced back and played the remaining eight holes at three-under par.  Pytlewski closed the day with a five-over 77 in round two and is currently tied for 16th place individually.

Pytlewski is followed by freshman Emily Talley, who is tied for 19th place with a two-over total of 146.  Talley shot a one-over 73 in both rounds.

“Emily (Childs) had a strong finish to her second round,” said Kelly.  “She birdied four of the last six holes.  Talley also had a very strong finish, going two-under on the back nine.  Once again the freshmen have proved to be consistent.  I am sure that Domi was disappointed with her second round so I know she'll come back ready to go tomorrow.”

Sophomore Stephanie Simich (77-72?149) and junior Julie Kim (81-76?157) rounded out the scoring for the Buffaloes, finishing the day in a tie for 30th and 85th place, respectively.  Both Kim and Simich shaved off five strokes from their first round scores, with Simich carding an even-par 72 in the second round.

“Stephanie probably made the best comeback of the afternoon with her even par 72,” said Kelly.  “Both she and Julie (Kim) improved on the second round and hopefully that will continue into tomorrow.”

Senior Cierra Ko and junior Christine Kim played as individuals in the tournament.  Kim (77-76?153) is in a tie for 53rd place and Ko (75-79?154) is currently tied for 61st.

“We definitely understand as a team that we are all going to have to play well and we can't just rely on someone else to do well,” said Childs.  “We all have to be on our game and want to win.”

Teams will tee off at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday in the final round in a shotgun start. Live stats are available at http://cubuffs.statsgeek.com/golf-w/live/2008hf/.
