Golfers Take Third In CU Heather Farr

BROOMFIELD ? The University of Colorado women's golf team was unable to find its stride and finished third in its own CU Heather Farr Memorial here Tuesday.
The University of Notre Dame separated from the rest of the field early in the final round and ended up posting a six-under total of 858 to take the team title. Texas Tech (863), Colorado (867) Colorado State (870), and CSU Long Beach (867) rounded out the top-five.
“We started out kind of flat today and just didn't seem to make many birdies,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “We made a few unforced errors, but the good news is that we had a very strong finish, especially from Emily Childs, Emily Talley and Julie Kim.”
Kay Hoey of CSULB took medalist honors after posting a nine-under 207 for the tournament. CU freshman Emily Childs and UC Davis' Alice Kim finished just three strokes behind Hoey, tying for second place individually.
Childs, who posted a four-under 68 in round one, wrapped up the tournament with a third round score of 72 and a 210 total. The freshman now owns three-straight top-10 finishes, taking second at CSU and seventh at UNM earlier this month.
Fellow freshman Emily Talley shot CU's best round of the day as she carded a one-under 71 for a 217 total, good for a tie for 16th place individually. Talley was one-under on the front nine, including an eagle on the sixth hole, and she finished with a final scorecard of 73-73-73-217.
“Everything but my putting was on today,” said Talley. “I was hitting everything well but I just didn't have my putting there to save me.
“There's a lot of pressure when playing on your home course. You know what you are capable of shooting out here and while it's reassuring to know everything about the course, there are high expectations and you have to really keep everything in perspective. It's a tournament and not just a practice, but I enjoyed it.”
Junior Dominique Pytlewski (68-77-79-224) and sophomore Stephanie Simich (77-72-75-224) finished in a tie for 36th place at eight-over par.
“Our bright spot today was the play of Stephanie Simich,” said Kelly. “She was much improved. She overcame a couple of bad holes and still shot a competitive score for us today.”
Junior Julie Kim showed significant improvement in every round as she shot an even par 72 on the final day and finished in a tie for 56th place.
Senior Cierra Ko and junior Christine Kim played as individuals in the tournament and tied for 65th and 73rd, respectively.
The Buffs will travel to Lubbock, Texas next week for the Texas Tech McHaney/Morehead Invitational, which junior Dominique Pytlewski won last year for her first-ever individual title. Fans who wish to follow the action can do so at www.golfstat.com.
“Now we have a short turnaround before Texas Tech,” said Kelly. “We're looking forward to playing a tournament on the 2009 Big 12 host course.”
