ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? Sophomore Abbie Probert and senior Franziska Jendrian each won their respective singles matches and then paired with other teammates to clinch the doubles point leading the University of Colorado tennis team to a 5-2 win over South Florida in a non-conference match played at the Randy Briggs Indoor Tennis Bubble.
CU secured the doubles point taking two of three slots, then took the top four singles positions for their second win in three matches on the young season. South Florida, ranked nationally at No. 43, drops to 0-2.
Probert and freshman teammate Michala Hedelund Jensen started the day off defeating Allyn Mueller and Lauren Shumate for an 8-1 winner at No. 3. After the Bulls tied the doubles score at one, Jendrian and freshman Ania Anuszkiewicz clinched the CU doubles point with an 8-4 winner over Jessica Sweeting and Natalia Guevara.
History was made for Jendrian as her doubles win moved her into sole possession on the school's all-time doubles victory list with her 67th career win. Jendrian passes Jessica Vanderdys (2002-06) and Sandra Fischer (1996-99), who each shared the previous second placing of 66 wins.
With a 1-0 lead, CU made it 2-0 on the scoreboard with junior Melisa Esposito defeating Jessica Zok 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 1 slot for her 14th win of the year.
After USF cut the deficit to 2-1 with a win at No. 6, the Bulls, who opened the season on Saturday falling to New Mexico, evened the team score at two with a singles win at No. 5.
The Buffaloes, ranked No. 57 nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, finally took the lead for good as junior Camila Belassi notched her 12th win of the year defeating Jessica Sweeting 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2, then Probert clinched the match defeating Natalia Guevara 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4. It was Probert's fifth triumph of the year and first career match where she clinched a team victory.
CU (2-1) rounded out the scoring making the final tally 5-2 as Jendrian made more history, this time picking up her 76th career singles win edging Iciri Rai 7-5, 7-5 at the No. 3 slot.
Jendrian moves up one spot tying Nathalie Dickson (1991-95) for eighth place on the school's all-time singles list.
“I'm happy with the way we competed overall,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “The doubles did a great job and we keep making improvements to get better each and every time we're on the court.”
CU travels to No. 5 Stanford next Saturday, Jan. 31 to take on the Cardinal at 3 p.m. (MST).
