Bardgett Fifth At Notre Dame; Buffs Finish 11th
October 06, 2009 | Men's Golf
SOUTH BEND, Ind. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team turned in the fourth best score in the final round Tuesday and moved up to an 11th place finish in the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic.
Host Notre Dame held on to its second round lead in winning with an 870 score, withstanding a final round challenge from Ohio State, as the Buckeyes posted the best single round of the tournament (3-over 283) to finish at 874. No. 20 Arkansas grabbed third with an 878 score.
Colorado closed with a 9-over 289, not only the fourth best team score in the final round but the sixth best in the entire meet on the tough 7,023-yard, par 70 Warren Golf Course layout. Colorado was in 13th place after both the first and second rounds before finishing with an 895 total, 25 out of the lead.
Senior Justin Bardgett posted his best collegiate finish, tying for fifth overall after closing with a final round 74 for a 6-over 216 total. His best previous finish was a tie for 17th in the The Wolverine At Mission Inn back in October 2007 when he was a sophomore. Starting on the back nine, he got into some trouble quick, scoring a bogey on No. 11 and a double on No. 13, the latter his only double bogey this week. He then settled down and played the next 10 holes at two-under par before struggling at the finish with three bogeys on his final four holes.
Bardgett has been one of CU's better performers in amateur competition in the summer, winning the Missouri State Amateur title in 2008, where he was the runner-up this past year. But until now, it hadn't transferred over to success on the college circuit.
“It feels good to finally get a top 10 finish,” Bardgett said. “Obviously I would have liked to have finished higher, but I played very solid for two days and three rounds in a row and it was fun to be in contention. I was 3-over pretty quickly, but then settled down and got it back to 1-over with four holes left. I feel that I played some really good golf in the middle of the round, but unfortunately, I had kind of shaky finish. I got a little tentative, playing defensive trying not to make mistakes, and I wound up making three. It happens, but you learn from it.”
“There certainly were some positive today,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said. “We had a good team meeting last night and the guys did a good job of listening and then implementing those things we talked about. We know we're a talented team, we're just trying to figure out how to play the game more effectively. That will come with experience, ultimately, but you can speed that up. They are definitely working hard, and they learned a lot about themselves, especially with how to manage a tough golf course. We have two tournaments left this fall and we're looking forward to what we can accomplish.
“This was a good test of golf,” Edwards added. “If you hit a good shot, you really get rewarded for it, and if you hit a bad shot, it's the opposite. So we'll definitely learn from this.”
Sophomore Sebastian Heisele recorded one of five subpar rounds Tuesday, with his 1-under 69 vaulting him 28 spots into a tie for 40th the final standings. He closed with a 226 total, or 16-over par. There were just eight subpar rounds in the entire tournament, two recorded by CU players as Bardgett also scored a 69 in the second round. Missouri and Texas-Arlington also had two players break par, thus only five teams had a player or players that posted a red number in this meet.
Sophomore Kevin Kring closed with a 74 for a 229 total to tie for 57th. Freshman Derek Fribbs shot his best round of the meet, a 2-over 72, to finish 60th with a 230 score, and junior Michael Imperato finished things off with a 76 for a 232 total, tying him for 62nd.
The Buffs resume action next week in California, traveling to Fairfax to participate in the University of California's Alister Mackenzie Invitational.
