Golfers Finish Third In Mackenzie
October 13, 2009 | Men's Golf
FAIRFAX, Calif. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team officially finished third here Tuesday in the Alister MacKenzie Invitational when the final round of the tournament was cancelled due to weather.
A fierce Pacific storm reached land overnight and with heavy rains and winds the area had not seen for over half a century. The course quickly became unplayable and the teams never began play. Because a full two rounds were played Monday, the event counts as an official NCAA event and the standings thus were final.
Host California won with a 545 team score, which was 23-under par. That is good for a five-shot win over No. 24 Oregon (550), with Colorado 10 back in third (555), followed by No. 2 Oregon State (556) and Fresno State (557).
This was one of the tougher fields early in the 2009-10 season, with six top 50 teams among the 15 that competed here. Colorado entered ranked at No. 98 (GolfStat; No. 99 by Golfweek), so the Buffs will get full credit for defeating five of those schools.
Colorado closed strong in Monday's morning round, playing the last six holes at 5-under par to move from 12th into seventh in the standings with a 4-under team score of 280. The Buffaloes zoomed into fourth early in the second round, playing the first four holes also at 5-under, before bouncing between there and sixth place before another strong finish that propelled them into third. Only six teams improved upon their morning scores on the layout.
Sophomore Sebastian Heisele used his collegiate best score, a second round 5-under 66 on the 6,708-yard, par 71 Meadow Club Course to tie for sixth overall. Senior Justin Bardgett tied for eighth (137, -5) and sophomore Kevin Kring (16th place tie, 3-under 139) joined Heisele with top 20 finishes.
THREE BUFFS IN MINES-REGIS FALL INVITE Three other Buffaloes competed individually Monday and Tuesday in the Colorado Mines/Regis Fall Invitational, held in Aurora at Blackstone Country Club. That competition was also shortened to 36 holes when early morning frost and ice delayed the first day by over three hours.
Redshirt freshmen Jason Burstyn (21st, 7-over 151) and Josh Creel (28th, 8-over 152) and along with true freshman Paul McConnell (34th, 10-over 154) represented CU here. They could play and not have the days count against CU's competition days since the meet is the same exact time as the Mackenzie in California.
Johnson & Wales University won the team competition with a 580 team score, five better than host Colorado Mines. JWU golfer Joonas Hinkkanen shot back-to-back 70s for a 4-under 140 to claim medalist honors by three strokes.
