Colorado, San Jose State Notes
December 23, 2009 | Women's Basketball
Colorado is 8-2 through 10 games for the second time in three years (2007-08).
The Buffaloes are a perfect 7-0 at home, their best start to the home schedule since winning their first eight at home in 2003-04.
Colorado wore its alternate gold uniforms for the first time this season.
Colorado held San Jose State to 13 first-half points. Combined with the 11 allowed against Southern Utah in the last game, the 24 points in back-to-back first halves are the lowest combined total in team history. The previous low total was 27 in 2001-02 in games against San Diego (36-18) and Bowling Green (53-9).
Colorado reached 80 points for the fourth straight home game (84.5 ppg). It's the first time CU has scored 80-plus in four straight at home since the 2001-02 season when the Buffs registered wins over Texas A&M (88-70), Iowa State (86-73), Kansas (80-41) and Nebraska (95-60)
Colorado had 13 steals against San Jose State, giving the Buffs double-digit steals in six of 10 games this season. CU had only five games with double-digit steals in 2008-09
Senior guard Bianca Smith moved into third place on CU's all-time list for 3-pointers after hitting 6-of-13 on the night, leaving her at 207 in her career. She passed Jenny Roulier who had 203 from 1998-02.
Smith had a season-best 25 points, just one off her career best of 26 against Texas in 2008. Her 25 points leave her at 899 for her career.
Smith made 3-of-3 from the free-throw line, improving her Big 12 leading total to 22-of-23 on the season (.957).
Freshman Meagan Malcolm-Peck had a career high 4 steals, all coming in the first eight minutes of the game which alone eclipsed her previous game best of three which she had done against Southern Utah and UC Irvine.
Malcolm-Peck also had 10 rebounds, her second double-digit rebounding output of the season.
Brittany Spears and Bianca Smith each scored 20 plus points. It was CU's first game of the season with two players scoring 20-plus points and first since the final game of the 2008-09 season where Brittany Spears had 23 points and Kara Richards had 22 against Kansas State in the first round of the 2009 Big 12 Championship.
Spears had a team season-high 28 points as she became the 17th player in team history to reach 1,200 career points (1,204).
Spears has made 39 of her last 67 field goal attempts (.582) over the last five games. She was 2-of-4 from 3-point range and has made 12 of her last 18 from long range (.667). She hit a season-high 10 field goals for the second straight game and third time this season.
