Women's Golf in Eighth at SDSU Invitational
February 15, 2009 | Women's Golf
CHULA VISTA, Calif. ? The University of Colorado women's golf team teed off its first tournament of the spring here Sunday in a tie for eighth place after the first round of the San Diego State Aztec Invitational.
UC Irvine leads the tournament with a first round score of 287 (-1), while the Buffaloes shot 304 (+16) on the 6,187 yard, par 72 Salt Creek Golf Course.
“We didn't play terrible, but no one really had a great day today, it was just sort of mediocre,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “We were a little rusty after the break. One round isn't going to kill us, we just need to make a strong comeback in the second round.”
Junior Dominique Pytlewski and freshman Emily Childs currently lead the Buffs after a solid first round, cruising to identical three-over par 75's on the day. Pytlewski and Childs are tied for 27th place overall.
“I didn't hit the ball terrible today and my short came was better than I could have hoped for, coming off not being able to putt as much over the break,” say Pytlewski. “I only had one birdie total and the team only had five, so that was tough. We didn't have enough birdies to counteract our mistakes so they were just average rounds. It's supposed to rain tomorrow and we play well in those conditions so hopefully we'll be able to make up some more ground.”
Junior Christine Kim and sophomore Stephanie Simich followed the pair by two strokes, carding five-over 77's, good for 40th individually. Kim, after going five-over on the front nine, rebounded strong to play the back nine even, including an eagle on the 12th hole and two birdies.
“I felt good going out there today, but I was just a little rough around the edges,” said Simich. “The course was set up well and fair, but I think that everyone just made a few errors that added up throughout the round. We know we need to turn it up tomorrow and go out there and focus on what we need to change and work on for the next two rounds. It's going to be rough conditions and I think we will be prepared for it.”
Freshman Emily Talley rounded out the team scoring for the Buffs, posting a first round score of 80 and sits in a tie for 74th place. Junior Julie Kim, tied for 82nd individually, competed as an individual for Colorado and shot a first round score of 81.
“We didn't show our best golf today, but it wasn't disastrous,” added Kelly. “We got the rust off and had a good wakeup call. We will look to make a good comeback in the next couple of rounds.”
Hillary Packard of UC Irvine leads the field with a four-under 68 after round one.
The second round of the Aztec Invitational will get underway Monday morning at 8 a.m. Fans who wish to follow the action can visit www.golfstat.com.
