Women's Golf Takes Ninth at SDSU Invitational
February 17, 2009 | Women's Golf
CHULA VISTA, Calif. ? The University of Colorado women's golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the spring season here Tuesday, improving three spots in the standings and finishing in ninth place in the San Diego State Aztec Invitational.
The San Jose State Spartans, who jumped out to a second day lead over the collegiate field, managed to hold on to first as they finished with a 288-312-300?900 scorecard. UC Irvine (906), San Francisco (914), Arkansas-Little Rock (921), and Texas Tech (923) round out the top five schools.
Colorado shot 306-326-304?936 on the 6,187 yard, par 72 Salt Creek Golf Course and the Buffs' third round was a 22-stroke improvement from round two.
“Overall this wasn't a great tournament for us,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “That said, our whole goal today was just to get back on track and get our momentum rolling for the spring season and I think that we were able to do that a little better today. Steph (Simich) certainly played well and that helped us a lot.”
Sophomore Stephanie Simich led CU in the tournament thanks to a strong third round, one-under 71. Simich demonstrated steady improvement with all three rounds, improving as much as seven strokes from round one to three. Her 226 total landed her a spot in the top-10 as she finished in a tie for ninth place.
“I was a little relieved that I didn't have to play in anymore rain like yesterday,” said Simich. “Today we had a quicker warm up and just jumped right back into it and I think I was a lot more relaxed today and that definitely helped.”
Junior Dominique Pytlewski, who was the team leader after two rounds, ran into some third round troubles and carded an 80 (+8). She ended the tournament tied for 31st individually.
Junior Christine Kim (79-86-75?240) and freshman Emily Talley (80-83-78?241) rounded out the scoring for the Buffs, finishing in a tie for 50th and 55th, respectively.
Freshman Emily Childs and junior Julie Kim did not compete in round three as Childs was forced to sit due to injury and Kim, who was playing as an individual for the Buffs, had to sit out round three with all of the other individuals in the tournament.
“Playing with four players is added pressure and everyone knows that their score is going to count no matter what,” said Kelly. “I think they responded well and now it's time to focus on getting back on track and moving in the right direction for the rest of the spring.”
“Our experience last year with less players on the team showed us that we always have to play our hardest and play the best round that we can because you never know when your score is going to have to count,” added Simich. “The last couple of days were tough conditions but we came around and played better today as we were able to get more comfortable with the game and playing in tournament conditions.”
Colorado will take a couple of weeks off before traveling back to California for the San Jose State Spartan Invitational on March 2-3.
