Dodson and Barringer Run Away With Athlete of the Week Honors

BOULDER-- Jeremy Dodson (senior) and Jenny Barringer (senior), were named University of Colorado Athletes of the Week for the week of February 9-15. This marks the first award of the season for Dodson and the fourth of his career, and Barringer's second award of the season and adding to her school record giving 16 career honors.
Dodson, a Denver, Colo. (George Washington/Arkansas) native, raced to a pair of first places finishes at the Air Force Invitational on Saturday. Dodson recorded a school record in the 200-meter dash as he broke the tape in 20.88 seconds. The time bettered the previous record by .14 seconds. The time qualifies Dodson for the NCAA Championship and was the fastest 200-meter time run this weekend. It is the top time in the Big 12 and ranks fifth in the nation. Dodson also owns the outdoor 200 record at 20.37. He also took first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.72 seconds.
Barringer, an Oviedo, Fla. (Oviedo) native, recorded the top mark in the NCAA Division I 5,000-meter run on Saturday at the Husky Classic. Along the way, she ran the second fastest mark ever by an American at 15 minutes, 1.70 seconds. The mark would have been an American record 10 days ago prior to Shalane Flanagan's run at the Boston Indoor Games (14:47). Barringer's time smashed the previous collegiate record at 15:14.18 as well as CU's record of 15:39.25. Running another solo effort, Barringer finished the race over a full minute ahead of the runner up who finished in 16:03.40. This is her second race of the indoor season and both have resulted in school records and top NCAA marks. Her 5k NCAA time is her second NCAA record. She also owns the steeplechase mark at 9:29.90.
Others nominated for this week's award were: Cory Higgins (men's basketball), Franziska Jendrian (tennis), and Brittany Spears (women's basketball).
Men's Basketball: Cory Higgins, Sophomore, Danville, Calif.
Higgins averaged 22.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in two games, most the points scored in a career-high 34 points in last Saturday's 85-76 overtime loss to Texas. Higgins, a sophomore from Danville, Calif., also tied a career-best 11 field goals made, in addition to a personal-high 20 attempts. He also played 43 of 45 minutes and made a career-best three 3-pointers. Earlier in the week, Higgins scored 11 points in CU's 70-42 loss at Iowa State. Higgins went 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Over the two games, he was 16-of-19 (.842) from the free throw line and shot 13-of-25 (.520) from the field.
Tennis: Franziska Jendrian, Senior, Rodleben, Germany.
Jendrian won her lone match of the week in straight sets claiming her 79th career singles victory. Jendrian defeated Bianca Jochimsen of Boise State, 7-6(5), 6-1 helping Colorado to a pair of singles points in Colorado's 5-2 loss to No. 37 Boise State. Jendrian also won her 19th singles win of the year. Her 79 career victories ranks seven all-time in school history.
Women's Basketball: Brittany Spears, Sophomore, Pasadena, Calif.
Spears had game high 25 points and recorded 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double, in CU's 79-50 loss to Texas A&M. Spears scored 10 of the Buffs' 16 first-half points. She finished the game shooting 9-26 from the floor. She was also shot 1 of 4 from beyond the three point line.
