Women's Golf Tenth at LSU Classic

March 14, 2009 | Women's Golf

BATON ROUGE ? The University of Colorado women's golf team carded a second-round total of 301 and jumped up one spot into a tie for 10th place with one round to play in the LSU Golf Classic here Saturday.

Colorado shot 296 in the first round of action on Friday and even though they added five strokes in round two, the weather seemed to affect a number of teams and the Buffs still managed to improve on position in the standings.  Virginia took over the team standings after an impressive second round total of 287 for an eight stroke lead over yesterday's leader, Wake Forest.

“It started raining towards the end of the round and the holes that we had to finish on were pretty tough,” said head coach Anne Kelly.  “Anyone that shot around a 295 had a solid round.  Steph show a 74 which was a great round for us and she played the back nine really well.”

Christine Kim still leads the Buffs in the individual standings after shooting a 75 in the second round.  She opened with an even par 72 in round two which keeps her in a good position in the individual standings as she is tied for 23rd place.

Sophomore Stephanie Simich carded the team's low second round score with a two-over 74.  Simich struggled on the front nine but was able to pull through on the back nine and keep herself in the middle of the pack, tied for 35th overall.

“I think I played pretty well today,” said Simich.  “I got off to a rough start but I knew that the weather would affect a lot of people so I stayed calm and composed throughout the round.  I am going to go into tomorrow with the same mentality.  I haven't made many birdies the last two days so I will make sure that I stay focused and make more putts.”

Freshman Emily Talley (75-76?151), junior Dominique Pytlewski (77-76?153) and junior Julie Kim (74-80?154) round out the scoring for the Buffs.  Talley is tied for 52nd place overall while Pytlewski is in 66th and Kim is in 72nd.

“We're hanging in there in tough conditions and a tough field,” added Kelly.  “Julie struggled a little today early in the round but she was able to bring it back, and Domi had a great round going in the beginning but had a tough finish.”

The final round of the LSU Golf Classic will tee off on Sunday morning at 8:30a.m. CT and fans can continue to follow the action at www.golfstat.com.
