Tennis Sweeps K-State, 7-0

March 22, 2009 | Tennis

MANHATTAN, Kan. ? The University of Colorado tennis team ran their Big 12 Conference record to 4-0 with a 7-0 shutout of the Kansas State Wildcats, Sunday afternoon. The win for the Buffaloes comes on the heels of 5-2 win over Kansas on Friday for a successful two-match sweep of conference foes in the state of Kansas.

The 4-0 conference start matches the 2007 spring season and is the third consecutive win over the K-State, and five of the last six over the Wildcats.

CU improves to 8-5 overall, while K-State drops to 3-7 and 0-3 in conference play.

“I'm proud of the girls in how they competed today,” CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “Kansas State is a good team and very solid at a lot of positions. Today was a lot closer than the 7-0 score indicated. I'm happy with the way the team kept their composure.”

After the Buffs rolled in the doubles portion for a 1-0 lead, singles play proved to be a different story as K-State would win the opening set in a pair of singles matches and rallied to win the second set in another pair. Overall, CU and K-State played four of the six singles positions to the maximum of three sets.

CU took a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard as Camila Belassi defeated Nina Sertic, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2 for her third straight win and 17th on the year.

Melisa Esposito made it four match wins in a row also winning in three sets edging Antea Huljev, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at the top position. Esposito won her 19th match of the year and remained unbeaten in three-set matches (4-0).

Abbie Probert clinched the match for CU, her second team clinching match of the spring, rallying from a set down to defeat Mariya Slupksa, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Probert has won three of four conference matches at the No. 4 slot and ties her for the team-lead with eight dual match victories with eight.

CU increased its team score advantage to 5-0 as Michala Hedelund Jensen defeated Natasha Vieira in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5; and Franziska Jendrian won for the 22nd time this year (eighth of the spring) with a come-from-behind three set win over Petra Chuda, 1-6, 6-3, 1-0(8).

It was also Jendrian's 82nd career singles match triumph moving her into sole possession of sixth place on the school's all-time victories list. Jendrian's pair of victories over the weekend moves her past Jessica Garrow (1997-2000).

It was also another milestone weekend for Jendrian as she picked up four wins in the state of Kansas (two singles, two doubles victories) becoming the school's all-time leader in combined wins. With 156 career wins (82 singles and 74 doubles), she passes Sandra Fischer (1996-99) who has 153.

Ania Anuszkiewicz completed the 7-0 shutout and rounded out the scoring at the No. 6 slot with a 6-4, 7-5 winner over Katerina Kudlackova.

In doubles, Anuszkiewicz/Jendrian (No. 2) and Hedelund Jensen/Probert (No. 3) have each won three of their last four matches and reached the winner's circle on Sunday by identical 8-1 scores. At No. 1 doubles, the CU duo of Belassi/Esposito won 8-2 for their second conference win in four matches.

Colorado, ranked No. 60 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll returns home to play No. 5 Baylor (Saturday, March 28) and No. 62 Texas Tech (Sunday, March 29). Both matches begin at 11 a.m. and are scheduled to be held at the South Campus Courts. In case of inclement weather, the matches will be moved to the Millennium Hotel Harvest House bubble. Please check the CU web site at www.CUBuffs.com for location of each match.
