Golfers Jump Into Fourth At Big 12 Championships
April 25, 2009 | Women's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas ? The University of Colorado women's golf team saw significant improvement here Saturday at the 2009 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship, and as a result the Buffs moved up three spots in the standings and are tied for fourth place after two rounds of play.
Reigning Big 12 champs and No. 5 Oklahoma State still holds on to the lead after two rounds, shooting 302 (+13) to lead Texas A&M by six strokes and third place Oklahoma by 24 shots. CU carded a 305 today, a 12-stroke improvement from Friday's score of 317 and the third-best team score of the day, giving the Buffs a 622 total.
Caroline Hedwall of OSU (145) still leads the medalist race, but is now tied with Ashley Freeman of Texas A&M.
Freshman Emily Talley continues to lead the Buffs, as she carded her second-straight 3-over par 76 in round two. Talley was 4-over through 10 holes before she recorded her second-ever eagle on hole No. 2. Talley played the remaining eight holes at 1-over and she is currently tied for eighth place individually.
Junior Julie Kim improved four strokes in round two and her 2-over 75 moves her into 15th place individually. Kim , who was 1-over through nine holes, lost her momentum on the back nine, carding a double and two bogeys on the first four holes. At 5-over through 13 holes, Kim took charge of her game and carded three birdies in her remaining five holes to post an excellent finish on day two.
“Brent came up to me towards the end and told me that our team was in a good position to make up some ground,” said Kim. “I knew that I couldn't get selfish and mad about one shot, but rather think about the team and play better so that we can get in a better position for tomorrow. That's when everything turned around. I think we're all getting used to the wind and finally shooting better scores as a team.”
Fellow junior Christine Kim had a tough time establishing a good rhythm in the second round, as she finished with a 7-over 80, good for 24th place individually. Kim, who carded a pair of doubles and a pair of bogeys on her front nine also managed three birdies to keep her at 4-over through nine holes. Kim played much more consistent on her back nine, but unable to record a single birdie, she was forced to slip back in the standings.
Sophomore Stephanie Simich and junior Dominique Pytlewski continued to stay on the same wavelength, as they each improved eight strokes and shot a 4-over 77 in round two. Simich turned her game around right from the start, carding three birdies in a four-hole span before a double-bogey on her ninth hole. After playing her front nine to par, Simich carded a pair of double-bogeys early on the back nine and hung on through the last six holes to stay put at 4-over. Pytlewski played a team-high 10 holes to par and she, along with Simich, stands in a tie for 45th place, a 10-spot improvement from day one.
“Definitely having Domi and Steph more on their games helped us tremendously,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “And Julie Kim played very solid golf.
“Our goal of course is to finish as high as we can,” added Kelly. “We have a shot to jump into third, which would be a really solid finish for us. But we cant control that, we can only control how to go about and approach tomorrow. We need to play smart again, take one shot at a time and stay focused in this wind.”
The 2009 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship will wrap up on Sunday morning with the third and final round. CU golf fans can follow Sunday's action at www.golfstat.com.
