Scott and Barringer Run Away With CU Athlete of the Week Honors
April 28, 2009 | Football, General, Track and Field, Women's Golf
BOULDER-- University of Colorado athletes Darrell Scott (sophomore-to-be) and Jenny Barringer (senior) were named the Athletes of the Week for the week of April 20-26. This marks Scott's first career honor, and Barringer's school record nineteenth, five of which have come this season.
Scott, a Ventura, Calif. (St. Bonaventure) native, rushed for 90 yards on 15 carries during the Buffs' annual spring game. He tallied 38 receiving yards, and returned one kick-off for 37 yards. He had a total of 165 all purpose yards from scrimmage. Possibly the highlight of the spring game was Scott's lone punt for 48 yards, which was pinned inside the 20 yard line.
Barringer, an Oviedo, Fla. (Oviedo) native, recorded the fastest time in the NCAA Division I in the 1500 meters on Friday night and the ninth best time in the country in the 800 on Saturday at the Oregon Relays. Barringer ran a time of 4 minutes, 8.38 seconds to beat the field by 8.98 seconds as the runner-up, Wichita State's Kellyn Johnson, recorded a time of 4:17.36. The time is also the CU record, surpassing the former record of 4:10.81 by Shayne Wille in 1997. Barringer is the first NCAA Division I athlete to finish in under 4:10 this season. On Saturday, she raced to yet another first place finish and the second best time in CU history. Barringer, who mainly concentrates on long distance runs and not middle distance, ran a mark of 2:05.43 which is the 11th best time in the NCAA. She was also named Big 12 athlete of the Week.
Others nominated for this week's award were: Emily Talley (women's golf) and Brandin Williams (men's track and field).
Women's Golf: Emily Talley, Freshman, Napa, Calif.
Talley recorded a 76-76-78--230 total in the 2009 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship, which was good for a sixth place tie individually. That is the highest finish by a Buffalo since Maria Persson-Gulda took fifth in the 2006 event and the highest finish in program history at the Big 12 Championships by a freshman. She became the first Buff to make the All-Big 12 Tournament Team since Persson-Gulda in 2006, and just the fifth overall since the conference was formed 13 years ago. The honor is given to the top-10 individuals plus ties. Talley recorded just four birdies and an eagle in three rounds of play, but making par on 32 of 54 holes proved that consistency and patience made all the difference for the freshman. Talley was 1-over through 13 holes in round three, but four bogeys in a five-hole span on her way in kept her from breaking into the top-five.
Men's Track and Field: Brandin Williams, Junior, Moreno Valley, Calif.
Williams recorded the seventh best javelin throw in CU history as he took top honors in the event with a 213 foot, two inch throw at the Jack Christiansen Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Williams improved on his regional mark and set a new personal record, topping his old PR by two feet, 10 inches. It is the 40th best throw in the country this season.
