BOULDER-- University of Colorado athletes Derek Tolan (senior) and Cassie Hirschfeld (sophomore) were named Athletes of the Week for the week of March 30-April 5. This marks Hischfeld's first career honor; Tolan now has three on the season and five career honors.
Tolan, a Highlands Ranch, Colo. (Highlands Ranch) native, led the Buffaloes to a tie for second place in the prestigious Western Intercollegiate, CU's best finish to date this spring. He tied for second overall, as he matched his season-best score with a 67 to finish with a 3-over 213 score on the 6, 511-yard, par-70 Pasatiempo Golf Club course. He had five birdies and one double bogey, otherwise scored pars on the remaining 12 holes for his final round. He led the field with 39 total pars for the three-round event, and his 67 tied for the low score for the final round and was one of just three under par. Tolan opened with a 69 and was the only player in the 93-man field to record two rounds under par.
Hischfeld, a Littleton, Colo. (Chatfield) native, became the seventh fastest female in CU history in the 100-meter dash as she finished the race in 11.96 seconds at the prestigious Texas Relays. Hirschfeld placed 37th overall and was sixth in her heat, which also had the fastest mark of the day at 11.21 by LSU's Samantha Henry.
Others nominated for this week's award were: Dominique Pytlewski (women's golf) and Camila Belassi (women's tennis).
Women's Golf: Dominique Pytlewski, Junior, Vancouver, B.C.
Pytlewski shook off a brief slump after the first two rounds of the prestigious PING/ASU Invitational and fired a one-under 71 for a 231 total and finished in a tie for 44th place individually. She had a team-best four birdies in her final round, the most by any Buff in the 15 rounds played here. Unable to record a single birdie in her first two rounds, Pytlewski took control of her game in round three, shaving off 10 strokes and jumping up 46 spots in the standings after her opening round. There were 17 teams in the field, including seven in the top-15 and 15 in the top-50, one of the strongest collegiate fields of the year.
Women's Tennis: Camila Belassi, Junior, Paysandu, Uruguay.
Belassi went 1-1 on the singles and doubles courts in Colorado's 0-2 weekend with losses at No. 32 Texas, 6-1 and No. 33 Texas A&M, 5-2. Belassi defeated Caroline Larrson of Texas 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 position on Friday for her 19th singles victory of the year. On Sunday Belassi and teammate Melisa Esposito defeated Texas A&M's No. 1 tandem of Cuthbertson/Liles, 8-2.
