Golfers Finish 12th At UNM Tucker Intercollegiate

September 13, 2009 | Men's Golf

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team finished in 12th place here Saturday afternoon as the 55th Annual University of New Mexico William H. Tucker Intercollegiate came to a close.

Nevada-Las Vegas cruised to an easy victory in the 17-team field, finishing with a 21-under par team score of 843.  That was good for a 16-stroke victory over San Diego State.  Colorado, which has been tied for seventh when play was suspended with four holes remaining Friday, slipped to a 12th place finish with an 891 total.

It was CU's first tournament competition of the 2009-10 season, though the Buffaloes opened the year two weeks ago with a dual match against Colorado State, falling 6-4 in the inaugural State of Colorado Cup in Holyoke.

One senior, two sophomores, a redshirt freshmen and a true frosh are competed here this weekend, just two of whom that has prior extensive college experience.

Sophomore Sebastian Heisele finished 24th overall to lead the way for CU, as he finished with a 4-over 220 scorecard on the 7,562-yard, par 72 UNM Championship Course.  He had CU's best single round here, a 3-under 69 that was spread over two days; he was five under par when play was called on Friday, but had three bogeys and a birdie on those last four holes to start his day.

Senior Justin Bardgett and sophomore Kevin Kring closed at 6-over 222, tying for 41st overall.  Bardgett finished his efforts here with a 2-under 70, his best round of the meet.

Freshman Paul McConnell tied for 75th with a 231 total, though the 15-over scorecard did feature an even-par middle round, with redshirt frosh Jason Burstyn rounding out CU's efforts here with a 235 score.

“There certainly were some good things, but also some things we need to work on,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  “I thought that Sebastian played some good golf, especially midway during the tournament.  If he keeps working hard, he has a chance to be an outstanding player for us.  Justin closed strong with a good score in third round, and Kevin played fairly solid overall.

“We had a lot of young player mistakes that might have cost us up to 25 shots in the tournament,” he added.  “Things like hitting to the wrong side of holes, coming in on the wrong side to approach the greens.  We have to be more disciplined on our course management and work on our game from 100 yards in.  Once we settle down in those two areas we'll see a lot of overall improvement.”

Two UNLV golfers, Derek Ernst and Colby Smith, shared medalist honors with 8-under par 208 scores.

The Buffaloes will return to action late next week, once again heading south on I-25 to participate in the Gene Miranda Air Force Falcon Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
