Buffs Can't Overcome Slow Start, Fall 90-78 to Oklahoma State

January 21, 2010 | Men's Basketball

STILLWATER, Okla. - Alec Burks scored a career-high 24 points, however Oklahoma State opened the game on an 11-0 run en route to a 90-78 victory over the University of Colorado men's basketball team, Wednesday night.

The Buffaloes did not get on the scoreboard until the 16:11 mark of the first half, and by then Oklahoma State already built an 11-0 lead behind five points from James Anderson.

Colorado trailed the whole game and falls to 10-8 overall, 1-3 in the Big 12. The Cowboys are now 14-4, 2-2.

"We got off to a very, very bad start," said CU Head Coach Jeff Bzdelik. "We had about a half dozen turnovers right away out of the gate; even the first possession of the game. We dug ourselves a hole."

Colorado fought back from their early hole and closed the Cowboys' lead to 27-24 with 4:48 remaining in the first half. That is as close as the Buffaloes would get, however, as Oklahoma State extended the lead to 37-30 at halftime.

The Cowboys came firing out of the break and quickly built the lead to 50-35 with 16:41 remaining, fueled by the hot hand of Obi Muonelo who hit two treys in that span.

The Buffs could not get the deficit under nine points from that point on, as Oklahoma State's hot shooting was too much to overcome. The Pokes made 7-of-14 three-pointers in the second half after going only 1-of-7 in the first.

James Anderson led Oklahoma State with 26 points and Muonelo finished with 18. Marshall Moses scored 20 points and recorded 18 rebounds.

Burks led CU with 24 and Dwight Thorne II added 15 points, all in the second half. Cory Higgins scored 13 points and Austin Dufault chipped in with 10.

Burks remains the only true freshman in the country to have scored in double digits in every game this season.

Colorado returns to action on Saturday to take on Texas A&M in College Station. The game will tip at 11:30 a.m. and will be televised on the Big 12 Network.
