Texas Tech Tops Buffs 1-0
October 01, 2010 | Soccer
LUBBOCK, Texas - The University of Colorado women's soccer team dropped its first Big 12 Conference match this season, falling to Texas Tech University 1-0 here at the John Walker Soccer Complex Friday evening.
The Buffaloes fall to 5-5-1 overall and 1-1-1 in Big 12 matches as the Red Raiders improve to 9-4 and 2-1 after picking up their first win over CU in Lubbock since Sept. 13, 1996.
"It was a high energy game because that's the way [Tom Stone] coaches," said head coach Bill Hempen. "Although I thought we had similar energy, they had more."
Tech took an early 1-0 lead just 6:19 into the game as Casey McCall scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Jessica Disabella. Disabella served the ball to McCall courtesy a corner kick and McCall connected with it on a header and sent the ball past Annie Brunner in the goal, just the second goal Brunner has allowed in the last three matches of league competition.
"We've been doing a pretty good job lately of defending free kicks and corner kicks, but they got a corner kick, and they buried it," Hempen said.
Not only were the Buffs trying to win on the road, which Hempen says "isn't easy to do in this conference," but the John Walker Soccer Complex is turf, providing a whole new set of challenges.
"It took at least 30 minutes for us to get used to the bounce and the pace, and it was hard as a rock," said Hempen.
The Buffs were held scoreless for the remainder of the game giving them their first conference loss this season, marking the third time CU has been unable to score.
"Texas Tech did what they had to do to win," said Hempen. "Now we have to gather ourselves and do it all again on Sunday. It's not going to get any easier as we play Baylor. They also have a good crowd that gives a lot of energy from the stands."
Colorado's match at Baylor is s scheduled to start at Noon MDT on Sunday.
