Buffs Fall 1-0 To Bears In Double-Overtime

October 03, 2010 | Soccer

WACO, Texas - The University of Colorado women's soccer team fell in a disappointing 1-0 double-overtime loss to Baylor University at the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field Sunday afternoon.

Colorado fell to 5-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in Big 12 Conference games as the Bears improve to 9-3-1 and 2-2 in league contests. The Bears have an all-time 5-2-2 advantage over CU in Waco.

After being held scoreless and losing its first Big 12 match to Texas Tech on Friday, Colorado came out with fiery determination against the Bears.

CU outshot the Bears in the first half 7-3 and earned five corner kicks and allowed the Bears none, but  the dynamic of the game quickly changed as senior defensive leader Kelly Ross was carried off the field after being injured. Ross did not re-enter the game.

Amy Barczuk and Alex Dohm took over at the center-back position for the remainder of the game.

Despite Colorado's intensity, the score remained tied 0-0 after 90 minutes to send the game into overtime, a place all too common for the Buffs. Overtime has been a frequent circumstance for the CU soccer team this season, and today was no different as the Buffs logged the fifth game this season that has gone past the 90 minutes of regulation.

Finally in the 104th minute, a team found the back of the net. Unfortunately, it wasn't a CU boot that knocked it in.

"We made a very bad play at the end that cost us the game," said head coach Bill Hempen.

With the game still scoreless, Sliwinski chased down a Colorado defender and flicked a pass towards the CU goal. Brunner hesitated coming out just enough to allow Larsen to get a foot on the ball, one-touch it around Brunner and slot the ball into the back of the net for the dramatic 1-0 double-overtime win.

"I am a really sad coach because of all the tackles and effort that the girls put into the game and to have it end like that is really sad," Hempen said. "We have to score goals and we're not doing that right now. We have to find a way to do that before next weekend."

The Buffs return home to host Missouri on Friday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m., and will take on Iowa State on Sunday, Oct. 10 with a 1 p.m. start.
