Buffs Held Scoreless by Tigers
October 08, 2010 | Soccer
BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team fell to the University of Missouri 1-0 Friday at Prentup Field after the Buffaloes were unable to score for the fourth game in a row.
Colorado (5-7-1, 1-3-1 Big 12) picked up its third straight Big 12 Conference loss as Missouri (5-5-2) improved to 3-1 in conference play.
"The good news is that we still have three at home so maybe we'll win three, at least we'll try," said head coach Bill Hempen. "When you get those chances early like we have before, and we don't score on them, you're just asking for trouble. If you get one [goal] you got a shot [to win]."
The Tigers outshot the Buffs in the first half 6-4, but both teams remained scoreless going into halftime, which is the sixth game this season CU has been unable to score in the first half.
"I think we came out a little slow in the beginning, but we got back into the game," said Kate Russell. "I felt like we didn't possess the ball like we usually do, so that hurt us because we couldn't generate momentum forward."
Missouri netted the game's only goal to take a 1-0 lead off a corner kick in the 64th minute. Hayley Krentz sent the ball towards the goal from the corner on the right side of the field. Jessica Greer connected with the ball on a header and buried it in the back of the net.
"We need to work on defending corners because it's disgusting how many times we've been scored on by them," said Russell. "We need to capitalize on our chances so hopefully we can do that Sunday."
Mizzou played an extremely physical game by committing a total of 16 fouls as CU only recorded six.
"I give credit to Missouri, they came in and did what they do," said Hempen. "I don't think we really played very well today."
With less than three minutes to play, Missouri's Alysha Bonnick was given a red card after tripping Alex Dohm at the top of the goal box. Russell took the direct kick for CU, but her attempt went high over the goal.
The Buffs have now been held scoreless for a total of 393:25 minutes dating back to Sept. 24 when Lizzy Herzl scored the game-winning goal to upset then No. 6-ranked Texas A&M 2-1 in overtime.
"We certainly have had opportunities," said Hempen. "It's just finishing at the end when you need it the most. At this point it's definitely becoming an issue. We're not going to get anywhere without scoring."
The Buffaloes return to Prentup Field on Sunday, Oct. 10 to host Iowa State at 1 p.m. Ralphie will make a special appearance at the game as she will run right before kickoff.
