Soccer Ends Scoring Drought With 3-1 Win Over ISU

October 10, 2010 | Soccer

BOULDER - The University of Colorado snapped a three-game losing streak and a four-game scoreless streak with a 3-1 win over Iowa State University Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field.

The Buffaloes (6-7-1) ended a 425 minute scoring drought, picking up the win to make their record 2-3-1 in the Big 12 Conference. Iowa State (6-7-2) suffered its second league loss of the weekend after losing to Nebraska on Friday, dropping to 1-4  in conference play.

"You never know what you're going to get after a loss, and we had a very difficult day yesterday as a team during training," said head coach Bill Hempen. "[Today] they came out and put it together, and they succeeded. The team itself was fantastic today."

"We definitely needed a win like this," said Shaye Marshall. "Not only a one-goal win, but we needed more than one goal to get a little confidence."

The Buffaloes were finally able to gain the confidence they needed after losing three in a row, but today's match against Iowa State started in a fashion all too scary for the Buffs as ISU made it onto the scoreboard first. Five of CU's seven losses this season have come after the opponent has scored first.

The Cyclones scored their only goal as Jessica Stewart had possession on the right side of the field and sent it on goal. CU goal keeper Annie Brunner managed to get a hand on the ball, but it slipped through her hands into the lower left side of the net in the 24th minute.

Colorado was able to tie the game 1-1 with 14:06 left in the first half. Kate Russell passed the ball over to Marshall who capitalized with her second goal of the season and the Buffs' first goal in October and first opening period goal in five contests.

"We were a little frantic being down by 1-0, but Kate got the ball and played a really nice through-ball to me," said Marshall. "It definitely started with Kate Russell."

Ralphie ran at Prentup Field before the 1 p.m. kickoff against ISU Sunday.

Russell netted the game winner for the Buffaloes, as she launched a strike from 25 yards out at the 79:31 mark to give CU a 2-1 lead. It was her second goal of the season.

"I looked up and saw the goal and hit it as hard as I could," said Russell. "I was happy it went in. Every goal you score whether it's ugly or pretty, it's always such a good feeling. College goals don't come along all that often, so to be able to have that goal made me very excited."

"[Russell] can hit them," said Hempen. "When you have that kind of gift in your leg, you might as well cut it loose."

In the closing minutes, Colorado increased its lead as Kassidy Fitzpatrick sent the ball down the left sideline to Alex Dohm who then crossed it to Kym Lowry. Lowry chased the ball down and went one-on-one with an ISU defender in front of the goal. From the right side, she sent a shot into the left region of the net past Maddie Jobe to secure the win for the Buffs in the 88th minute.

"That was a real good effort by all three kids," said Hempen. "First Kassidy's effort to get to the ball in the first place and see Alex on the move and then for Alex to see Kym, that was three of the best decisions made all day. That was good for us."

Today's win marks the first time this season that Colorado has been down a goal and rallied back to pick up a win.

"Now we know we can do it," said Russell. "Hopefully in the future if we go down a goal we will be able to remember this moment and be able to do the same thing."

The Buffaloes travel to Oklahoma for a pair of conference matches as they take on No. 7 Oklahoma State on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. MDT and Oklahoma on Sunday, Oct. 17 at noon. The matchup in Stillwater, Okla. against the Cowgirls will be nationally televised on the Fox Soccer Channel.
