Buffs Fight Hard But Fall to No. 5 Cowgirls, 3-2
October 14, 2010 | Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team put up a fight against No. 5 Oklahoma State University, but fell to the Cowgirls 3-2 Thursday night at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
The Buffaloes (6-8-1) fall to 2-4-1 in conference play as the Cowgirls (13-1-1) continue to stay undefeated in the Big 12 with a 6-0 mark.
"(We) played pretty good, but again you can't play pretty good for a little bit of time," said head coach Bill Hempen. "You have to play pretty good a lot more than we did."
The Cowgirls logged the first goal of the game just nine minutes into the first half. Kyndall Treadwell kicked a through-ball from 25 yards out to Krista Lopez on the right side of the goal. Lopez gained control, cut the ball back and blasted it left-footed into the far side of the net. OSU took a 1-0 lead on Lopez's 12th goal of the season.
Oklahoma State dictated the game's tempo throughout the first half keeping the Buffs scoreless and owning a 1-0 lead at halftime. The Cowgirls outshot the Buffaloes 6-1. CU's goalkeeper Annie Brunner recorded three saves in the first half.
Just minutes into the second frame, Oklahoma State netted another goal. Katie Richardson's close range shot was deflected by Brunner, but the rebound went directly back to Richardson who booted it high over Brunner's head to put the Cowgirls up 2-0 in the 48th minute.
The Buffaloes quickly answered back with their first goal less than a minute later at 48:40. Kate Russell had possession of the ball on the right sideline. She served the ball to Kassidy Fitzpatrick who shot the ball into the lower right side of the net.
After scoring one goal, the Buffaloes regained momentum and tied the game 2-2 on a score by Shaye Marshall off a corner kick from Caroline Danneberg at 57:47.
OSU soon retaliated on the opposite end of the field at 58:52. Richardson sprinted down the field with the ball past several Colorado defenders. Brunner left her box to try and cut off her possession, and Richardson sent the game-winner into an open net to give OSU a the final margin.
Colorado increased its shot count from one in the first half to a total of six in the second.
"We played very hard," said Hempen. "The team played with incredible determination, but we came out in second place again. We had some chances to make some plays, but we didn't make them at the crucial time whether it was offensively or defensively. And when you're playing against a team like that, they will make you pay for those (mistakes)."
The Buffaloes will travel to Norman, Okla. on Sunday, Oct. 17 to take on the Sooners at noon MDT.
