Schleich Falls in ITA Regional Round of 16

LAS VEGAS - University of Colorado freshman Kristina Schleich won her first and second round singles matches on Wednesday, however fell in the Round of 16 on Thursday at the 2010 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships. The five day regional is being held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus.
More than 110 women's collegiate tennis players will compete this week, and for the first time the ITA women's event will be played in Las Vegas. Members from 18 western teams will face off as individuals through Sunday on 12 tennis courts each day in both singles and doubles.
In opening round play, Schleich defeated Brittiny Moore of Weber State, 6-4, 6-1, then followed with a three-set winner over UNLV's Ella Bourchier, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2. The wins were Schleich's sixth and seventh of the fall season. Her come-from-behind victory in the second round was her first collegiate tally after dropping the opening set.
In the Round of 16 played on Thursday, Schleich fell to Nevada's Emma Verberne, 6-3, 6-2.
Junior Michala Hedelund Jensen and freshman Carla Manzi Tenorio went 1-1 during their singles play. Hedelund Jensen defeated Anya Villanueva of New Mexico, 7-5, 6-2, for her fifth straight win and seventh victory of the fall season. Hedelund Jensen lost her second round match to Wyoming's Alexandra Kovacs, 6-4, 6-2.
Manzi Tenorio opened the main singles draw defeating Kelsie Craig of BYU, 6-3, 6-0 for her fourth triumph of the fall, then subsequently lost to seventh seeded Aleksandra Josifoska, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the second round.
CU freshman Winde Janssens lost her first collegiate match in four attempts falling to Idaho's Lauren Simpson, 6-0, 6-4.
This will be one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 4-7, at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
