Aggies Top Buffs In Three
October 23, 2010 | Volleyball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M Aggies swept the University of Colorado volleyball team 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-12) on Saturday afternoon at Reed Arena.
The loss moves the Buffs to 6-11 overall, 3-8 in the Big 12, while Texas A&M improves to 9-12, 4-7 in the conference.
CU's offense recorded 18 kills in the match while hitting .028. Anicia Santos led CU with six kills and hit .455 with just one error on 11 swings. Kerra Schroeder recorded just four kills despite receiving 46 attacks. Nikki Lindow added three kills while Rosie Steinhaus and Michelle Miller each recorded a pair.
"Our offensive performance tonight was subpar and it made it very difficult to keep pace with Texas A&M's offense today," coach Liz Kritza said. "Despite our relative youth, everyone knows that this level of performance is unacceptable, especially since we are intently focused on continual improvement.
A&M hit 47 kills in the match with a .252 attack percentage. Kelsey Black had 13 kills and Lindsey Miller added 12. Miller also hit a match-high .611 with only one error on 18 attacks.
Defensively the Buffs picked up 43 digs. Megan Beckwith recorded 16 digs and Elysse Richardson had 10 in the effort. Lindow put up four total blocks, one solo and three assists. On the other side of the net, the Aggies recorded 65 digs, 20 coming from Black.
"We have to take accountability for our shortcomings today and take all the necessary steps to prevent this result at all costs," Kritza explained. "There are many bumps along the road in path of building this program, but we must always make progress."
The Aggies got out to 10-2 start in the first set before Schroeder recorded CU's first kill of the match (10-3). CU struggled to get its offense going with the Aggies recording five aces in the set. A&M increased its lead to 20-7, but then the Buffs started a comeback with a 6-0 run to bring the score to 20-13. A&M took five of the next seven points to close out the set 25-15, but CU seemed to have momentum to carry into the second set.
Colorado looked better starting the second set and used a 3-0 run to go up 11-8. A&M struck back with its own 8-0 run to take a 16-11 lead, which would be hard for the Buffs to come back from. CU got within three points at 17-14, but A&M pulled away again and the Buffs would not be able to close the gap was they fell 25-18.
A&M took the first six points to start the third set. The Buffs tried to get back into it, but weren't able to sideout and hold their serve, falling 25-12 in the set.
The Buffs stay on the road for a match in Waco, Texas against Baylor on Wednesday, October 27. First serve is set for 6 p.m. (MT) at Ferrell Arena.
