Buffs Lead Own Heather Farr Memorial Invitational

October 08, 2010 | Women's Golf

ERIE, Colo. - Five University of Colorado women's golfers are in the top 10 and the team is leading its own Heather Farr Memorial Invitational by five strokes after 36-holes of action here Friday at the Colorado National Golf Club.

Amidst thunderstorms in the area, Colorado took a one-stroke advantage after the first round and the second-best performance in the twice-delayed second round to take a five stroke advantage after two rounds with a 290-300-590 score.  Colorado State (595) is in second place, just five strokes back of the Buffaloes, while Fresno State sits firmly in third place (603), eight strokes back of the Rams.  Fourth through seventh places are separated by just three strokes as Nevada (611) is fourth, Northern Iowa (612) fifth and Wyoming and Portland State are tied for sixth with two-round totals of 614.

Play was suspended twice because of lightening in the area, the first time from 2:15-2:45 p.m. and the second from 4:05-5:25 p.m.  The players were forced to deal with gusty winds along the delays throughout most of the second round.

Sophomore Taylor Doyle led the way for the Buffs with a 71-75-146 scorecard and is tied for third individually on the par-72, 6,577-yard championship layout.  Doyle's 1-under par performance in the first round is her second under par round on the season.  She played consistently par golf with two birdies and one bogey to go with her 15 pars.

Freshman Kristin Coleman (72-75-147) is tied for fifth just one stroke behind Doyle.   She was even par in the first round with three birdies, one bogey and one double-bogey and she added two birdies and five bogeys in her second round.  Juniors Jessica Wallace (73-75-148) and Emily Talley (75-75-150) both had rough endings to their second rounds.  Wallace was 1-under par through 13 and then had two bogeys and a double-bogey to end her round as the sun was setting.  Talley was one under through 10 holes and then played the next five holes at 4-over par before a birdie-par to end her day and get her back to 3-over par.  Freshman Jenny Coleman (74-80-154) had a very good first round and had two double bogeys in the second round to finish 8-over par.

CU also has four players playing individually and junior Meaghan Kari (73-77-150) is currently tied for 10th, fueled by a first round 1-over par 73, the best round of her CU career.  If she can maintain 10th place Saturday, she would become just the second individual in the 13-year history of the Heather Farr to finish in the top 10.  Freshman Tessa The (79-75-154) also played the best golf of her short career and is tied for 18th overall.  Her second round 75 is tied for the seventh best round in the field.  Junior Jamie Befort (78-82-160) is tied for 45th and sophomore Devin Dougherty (82-87-169) is tied for 58th.

Fresno State's Louisa Lies used a second round 69 to finish the day 3-under par and leads the field by three strokes.  Colorado State's Emily Roering is second at even par 144 while Eastern Michigan's Darby Peters is tied with Doye in third place at 2-over par 146 while CSU's Brianna Espinoza, Northern Iowa's Brianna Espinoza and Kristin Coleman are tied for fifth at 3-over par 147.

The third round will get under way Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
