Kelly Adds Larson To Women's Golf Roster

December 22, 2010 | Women's Golf

BOULDER - University of Colorado women's golf coach Anne Kelly announced that Gina Larson will continue her education at CU and join the women's golf program in the class of 2011.

"Obviously with no seniors on this year's squad, we weren't going to sign a large class," Kelly said. "But I'm thrilled that Gina has decided to come to CU and join our program as we venture into the Pac-12.  I'm very excited about this team both for this coming spring and next year, as well."

Larson attends Silver Creek High School in Longmont, Colo., her senior year after having attended Niwot High School her freshman through junior years but because neither school offers golf as a sport, she has participated for nearby Skyline High School her entire high school golf career.  She is the reigning Golfer of the Year as named by both the Boulder Daily Camera and Longmont Times-Call.  She was name first-team All-State (Class 5A) by the Denver Post in 2010 as a junior when she was also the Northern League Player of the Year. She finished fifth place at the State Championship tournament and helped Skyline to a third place finish as a team after taking second place finish at Regionals.  Skyline won the Colorado State Championship in 2009 when she placed sixth individually and earned honorable mention All-State honors from the Denver Post while Skyline took second at Regionals that year.  Skyline won the Regional Championship her freshman season and finished third at state when she took 15th individually in 2008.  She was the Longmont All-City champion in 2008 and has been named All-Northern League all three seasons at Skyline to date.

She attended school in Minnesota during seventh grade before moving to Colorado and lettered in golf that season as the No. 2 golfer on varsity, earning All-Conference mention.  She has also participated in basketball and volleyball in high school, earning two letters as a post player on the hardwood her freshman and sophomore seasons and playing outside hitter on the junior varsity volleyball team as a freshman.

"Gina is a talented golfer and has a lot of potential to become a competitive collegiate golfer," Kelly said. "It's great to have a local player join our team."

Away from high school golf, she has had substantial success in amateur tournaments.  She finished 10th among amateurs in the 2010 Colorado Women's Open after taking 20th place in the 2009 event.  She has participated in the U.S. Women's Amateur Qualifier in Denver twice, finishing 13th in 2009 and 15th in 2010.  This fall she has participated on the Future Collegians World Tour and won her last event on that tour, the Ritz Carlson at Dove Mountain in Tucson, Ariz., on December 11-12.  She took eighth at the Coyote Creek Golf Club in November and 11th at the Mission Hills Resort Pete Dye Course in early December.  She considers the Boulder Country Club her home course and has shot a 69 there while her best round in competition is a 72, which she did at the Boomerang Golf Course in Greeley.

Born on Feb. 9, 1993, in Edina, Minn., Larson is the daughter of Michael and Julie Larson and has one brother, Brian, who played golf at Kansas State for two years and also attended CU.  Her dad played golf at TCU, the same time the CU coach Anne Kelly was on the women's team there, and he is currently the general manager of the Boulder Country Club.  She is interested in majoring in psychology or business at Colorado and would like to pursue a career as a professional golfer or in sports medicine after graduation.  She enjoys all sports and outdoor activities and likes to go hunting and fishing with her dad and brother.  She chose Colorado because of the academics, coaching staff and facilities, the atmosphere and her future group of teammates.  She was also recruited by New Mexico, Colorado State, Baylor, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Wyoming.
