Tennis Drops 5-2 Decision

March 14, 2010 | Tennis

AMES, Iowa - For the second time in three days the University of Colorado tennis team dropped a Big 12 Conference match, this time to Iowa State, 5-2, Sunday morning. The loss drops the Buffaloes to 7-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play, while the Cyclones improve to 7-6 and 2-1 in the league.

The loss also marks the first time CU has dropped its first two conference matches to start a season since the 2003 spring, however, still made the NCAA Tournament.

"Iowa State played a solid match today," head coach Nicole Kenneally said. "Against any Big 12 opponent, nine positions need to be active during the match, and today we were in and out with concentration in couple of the positions."

Sunday's match marked the second straight match CU played without seniors Monica Milewski and Camila Belassi.

The singles competition was played first instead of doubles due to court availability leading to a pair of CU wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions. Sophomore Michala Hedelund Jensen edged Tessa Lang, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3; and Ania Anuszkiewicz defeated Jenna Langhorst, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4.

Hedelund Jensen has now won four of her last six matches and secured her 11th win of the year, while Anuszkiewicz picked up her sixth victory.

In doubles, Melisa Esposito and Abbie Probert earned an 8-6 win at No. 1, however the Cyclones took the No. 2 and No. 3 slots to clinch the doubles point. The win for Esposito was her 72nd of her career and Probert earned her 46th.

CU hosts No. 20 South Carolina this Saturday, March 20 at 11 a.m.
