Women's Golf In 10th At Spartan Invitational

March 08, 2010 | Women's Golf

SAN JOSE, Calif.  - The University of Colorado women's golf team continued spring action here Monday and finds itself in 10th place after two rounds of the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational.

Host San Jose State sits atop the leader board after two rounds after shooting a 595, or 19-over par.  The Spartans, ranked No. 36 nationally, hold a six stroke advantage over No. 26 UC Davis (601) while No. 14 California is third with a two-round total of 602.  Fresno State has a two-round total of 604 headed into the final round while places five through nine are separated by three strokes.

Colorado leads the second wave of team scoring with a total of 625, or 49-over par, as 14 strokes separate a three way tie for seventh place and the 10th-place Buffaloes.

Weather played a big role in the scoring on the day, as rain and wind dominated the day at the 6,223 yard, par-72 Almaden Country Club golf course.

"It was every weather condition possible today," CU head coach Anne Kelly said. "It even hailed a little bit.  It was rainy and windy, and then the sun would come out, and then more wind and rain.  We had everything but snow and an earthquake."

Colorado sat tied for 12th after the first round, shooting a 25-over 313.  The Buffs improved one shot to 312 in the second round and was one of just four teams who improved its score from the first to second round along with UC Davis, San Francisco and Hawai'i.

Senior Julie Kim was CU's top performer in each of the first two rounds and currently sits tied for 25th with a 36-hole total of 153, or 9-over par.  Sophomore Emily Talley is two strokes back at 11-over par 155 and is tied for 33rd place while senior Christine Kim shot a 12-over par 156 and is tied for 38th place.

"We did some positive things," Kelly said. "We just need to cut down on the detail mistakes.  We have to find four or five shots a person.  We have players capable of shooting low scores, it's just a matter of taking care of the details."

Freshman Taylor Doyle shot a 17-over par 161 and is tied for 61st place while junior Stephanie Simich is tied for 69th with a 20-over par 164.  Simich had a better second round after "a few holes kind of snuck up on her" in the first round, according to Kelly.

San Jose State's Cristina Corpus leads the way with a 1-under par 143 after two rounds, and she has a one stroke lead over Fresno State's Louisa Lies and Oklahoma State's Carolina Hedwall, who both sit at even par entering the final round Tuesday.

Play will begin at 9 a.m. MST on Tuesday in a shot gun start as the Buffs will be paired up with Oklahoma and Santa Clara.
