Women's Golf Finishes 11th At Spartan Invitational
March 09, 2010 | Women's Golf
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Colorado women's golf team posted its best team round of a 20-over par 308 but still fell one spot to finish 11th at the 2010 Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational here Tuesday at the Almaden Country Club.
No. 14 California and No. 26 UC Davis surged past host and second round leader San Jose State to finish in the top two spots. UC Davis held the lead until the final holes, when California took the lead and ended up with the win with a team score of 899, or 35-over par.
Sophomore Emily Talley led the way for the Buffaloes, shooting a 1-under par 71, tied for the best final round in the field and one of just two subpar rounds on the day. Additionally, it was one of just six such rounds in the entire tournament.
"Emily played really well today," CU coach Anne Kelly said. "She did get a double bogey, but she rebounded to finish strong with two late birdies to put herself in contention for a top 10 finish."
Talley had five birdies with two bogeys and a double bogey and vaulted herself from a tie for 33rd place all the way to a six-way tie for 11th place, just one shot behind a four-way tie for seventh.
"I'll take what I can get," Talley said. "Today was a good 'You don't have to be perfect to have a good round of golf,' day. I was just concentrating on each shot and overall it worked out. The conditions were a lot better today, just a little breeze, but no rain and no hail, so it was a good day. There were a few holes with some breeze where you we were clubbing up in some places, but nothing too extreme."
Senior Christine Kim carded at 6-over par 78 for the third straight round to finish with an 18-over par 234 for the tournament. Senior Julie Kim finished with a 7-over par 79 for a three-round total of 16-over par 232, good for 30th place. Freshman Taylor Doyle finished 8-over par 80 in the final round and 25-over 241 for the tournament while junior Stephanie Simich tallied a 9-over par 81 in the round and 29-over par 245 over three rounds.
"We just have to get going," Kelly said. "We didn't play too well today as a team, so we have some work to get done before our next tournaments."
San Jose State's Cristina Corpus won on her home course with a three-round total of 1-over par 217. UC Davis's Demi Runas finished second with a 3-over par 219, Oklahoma State's Caroline Hedwall and UC Davis' Amy Simanton third and Joanne Lee from California and Fresno State's Louisa Lies tied for fifth.
The Buffs will have a week off before traveling to St. George, Utah, to play in the BYU Dixie Classic on March 22-23.
