Women's Golf In Sixth At BYU At Entrada Classic
March 22, 2010 | Women's Golf
ST. GEORGE, Utah -- After a shaky first round, the University of Colorado women's golf team used the third-best second round in the field to finish the day in sixth place at the 2010 Brigham Young University at Entrada Classic here Monday. CU shot a 28-over par 316 in the first round and was tied for 11th place, but shaved 12 strokes off its team score in the second round to finish the day at 44-over par 620.
San Diego State sits atop the leader board, shooting a 15-over par 591 and holds an eight stroke advantage over second place Louisville, as the 27th-ranked Cardinals have a two round total of 23-over par 599. Colorado State (605), Nebraska (612) and host BYU (616) round out the top five in the standings. The Buffs sit four strokes behind the Cougars in sixth place at the par-72, 6,154 yard Johnny Miller Signature Golf Course at the Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club.
"I'm not even sure how to describe the first round," CU coach Anne Kelly said. "The course is visually intimidating, and we talked about that during the practice round. But if you play it smart, you can shoot low scores. We just didn't have everybody do that in the first round.
"But everybody did shoot a lot better in the second round," Kelly continued. "Emily Talley had some steady play, she hit the ball great. She had a lot of birdie opportunities and missed some puts. It's a competitive field, but if she can continue, she can have a really high finish."
Talley led the way for the Buffs, and she currently sits tied for eighth place at 5-over par 149. In the first round, she found herself 4-over par after a double bogey just five holes in, but she settled down and played the rest of the round at even par, with one birdie and one bogey.
"The first round got off to a hectic start," Talley said. "This course is scary. There are some holes that are knee knockers off the tee, because if you don't hit the fairway, you're in a lava field and it's pretty much a lost ball. It's stressful, you have to be patient, smart and don't ask for too much and it works out."
Each of the five Buffaloes scoring and one of the two playing as individuals improved from the first to second rounds. Freshman Taylor Doyle finished the day at 13-over par and is tied for 23rd place, while senior Christine Kim is two strokes back and tied for 33rd. Kim was able to improve seven strokes from the first to second rounds, when she shot a 75 with 15 pars and three bogeys.
Both Meaghan Kari and Dominique Pytlewski were having significantly better second rounds until the final few holes. Kari was shooting 1-over par through the first 13 holes before finishing the final five holes by shooting 6-over par. She finished the day tied for 38th at 17-over par 159. Pytlewski was at 3-over par through 13 holes and ended the round at 8-over par, and has a two round total of 18-over par 162 and is tied for 47th. Both Jamie Befort and Devin Dougherty, playing individually, are tied for 61st place with a two-round total of 23-over par 167.
"Both Devin and Jamie, this is the first tournament they've traveled to," Kelly said. "They didn't necessarily play that great, but they got some great tournament experience."
The weather has been near perfect, but the intimidation of the course comes from its back nine holes, which are played on a lava field, what Kelly describes as "playing on the moon."
The day begins what will be a busy week for the Buffs during CU's spring break. Colorado will conclude the BYU Invitational Tuesday and travel straight to Tucson, Ariz., where the Buffs host the 2010 MountainView Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
"It's the same routine as any other trip," Kelly said "Get up, play golf, eat and sleep. It's nice that we're not missing any class and there aren't any immediate deadlines for them to meet with school work."
Tuesday's final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. MT and the Buffs will be paired up with BYU and Nebraska.
