Women's Golf Finishes Sixth At BYU At Entrada Classic
March 23, 2010 | Women's Golf
ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Sophomore Emily Talley matched her career best finish and the University of Colorado women's golf team held serve here at the 2010 Brigham Young University at Entrada Classic Tuesday, finishing the tournament in sixth place where it began the day. The Buffs shot a 24-over par 312 to finish the tournament with a 68-over par 932. The team finish matches the Buffaloes best of the 2009-10 season.
San Diego State ran away from the field, winning by 15 strokes with a 26-over par 890. Louisville finished second with a three day total of 905, 16 strokes ahead of third place Nebraska (921). The standings were then tighter, as Colorado State was just one stroke behind the Huskers at 922 with host Brigham Young finishing fifth at 929, three strokes ahead of the Buffaloes. Colorado then had a 10-stroke cushion over seventh place North Texas (942).
"We had it going for a while, we just didn't have a great finish," CU coach Anne Kelly said. "We're close, we just need to play all 18 holes. Talley had another great day for us, she hit a lot of good quality shots and made some key birdies and finished really strong."
Talley used a strong finish to end her day in a tie for sixth place with a three day total of 222, or 6-over par. She was 4-over par through the first 11 holes in the third round and then had a huge break when she hit her tee shot on the next hole into the lava field. The shot bounced back onto the fairway and she got a birdie and that started a run of three birdies in the next four holes that bought her back into contention for a top five finish.
"It was an awesome break," Talley said. "It bounced out of the lava and it kicked even further than it would have otherwise. It could've led to a completely different hole. You have to be thankful for that stuff when it happens. It was also the hard part of the course in the lava fields. Before that, I was just kind of bogeying along. I like finishing strong, so it was a good finish."
Talley's sixth place finish matches the best of her career along with last year's Big 12 Tournament. Her 1-over par 73 in the final round was the second-best of the entire field and her top 10 finish gives her six in her career, tied for fifth most in CU history. After finding herself at 4-over par just five holes into the first round, she shot the subsequent 52 holes at 2-over par.
Senior Christine Kim used a final round 76 to move up 12 spots and finish tied for 21st with a three day total of 233, or 17-over par. She shot a 7-over par in the final two rounds combined after opening with a 10-over par 82 in the first round.
Freshman Taylor Doyle finished in a tie for 29th after a final day 81, as she finished with a three day total of 236. Sophomore Meaghan Kari had a final round of 82 to give her a three day total of 241, good for a tie for 39th, while senior Dominique Pytlewski finished with an 84 to give her a 246 in the three rounds, good for a tie for 46th. Junior Jamie Befort carded a final round 81 to give her a 248 and tie for 48th while freshman Devin Dougherty finished with a final round 85 and her three day total of 252 was good for 61st. Both Befort and Dougherty were playing individually.
BYU's Maggie Yuan won the tournament by a stroke, finishing with a 2-under par total of 214. She shot a blistering 8-under par 64 in the first round and held on for the individual victory. Louisville's Daphne Parker also finished under par, shooting a 1-under par 215 with San Diego State's Malin Enarsson (219) taking third, Oklahoma State's Caroline Hedwall (220) fourth and San Diego State's Christine Wong (221) fifth.
The Buffs will continue action this week at the 2010 MountainView Collegiate Invitational, a satellite tournament the Buffs host in Tucson, Ariz. Action in that tournament will begin at 7:30 a.m. MT on Friday.
