Texas Tech Leads MountainView, Buffs In Eighth

March 26, 2010 | Women's Golf

TUCSON, Ariz.-Sophomore Emily Talley sits just two strokes off the lead and the University of Colorado women's golf team is in eighth place after the first two rounds here Friday its own MountainView Collegiate Invitational.

Texas Tech leads the event, leapfrogging Brigham Young and Colorado State after sitting in third place after the first round.  The Red Raiders are currently at 19-over par with a two-round total of 595.  The lead pack of six teams are all within five strokes of each other, which will make for an interesting third round Saturday.  BYU is currently second, just one stroke back at 596, with Colorado State and UNLV both just one more stroke back at 597 and Baylor and Iowa State tied for fifth with team scores of 600, or 24 over par.

Indiana is on a bit of an island in seventh place, six strokes behind the fifth-place tie with a 606 and five strokes ahead of the host Colorado Buffaloes, who lead the second pack of teams with a 35-over par 611.  There's a four team tie just one stroke behind the Buffs as Kansas State, Michigan, Missouri and San Jose State all earned team scores of 612 for the first two rounds.  Wisconsin is in 13th place, just two strokes behind the Buffaloes with a team score of 613, while Northern Arizona (615), Washington State (616), Gonzaga (617) and Sacramento State (621) round out the second pack of scores. Boise State shot a 638 to round out the team scoring.

The individual scores are even more bunched than the team scores as 45 golfers are within seven strokes of each other, including a four-way tie for first place between Indiana's Kelley Belcher, Missouri's Julia Potter, UNLV's Kristen Schelling and BYU's Kelsey Vines.   There's then a two-way tie for fifth between Colorado State's Kasey Claussen and Texas Tech's Gabriella Dominguez just one stroke off the lead.  Talley is in a six-way tie for seventh place just two strokes behind the lead foursome.

The Buffs had a solid morning round, shooting a 14-over par 302 while Talley and senior Christine Kim both carded a 2-over par 74, senior Dominique Pytlewski shot a 4-over par 76 and freshman Taylor Doyle shot a 6-over par 78 and Meaghan Kari was one stroke behind Doyle at 7-over par.  The Buffs were tied for seventh after the first round.

In the afternoon, Talley and Doyle matched their first round scores, but the rest of the Buffs all slipped between three and four strokes.  Kim shot a 78 in the second round, while Pytlewski shot a 79 and Kari an 82.

"We did fair this morning, and then struggled this afternoon," CU head coach Anne Kelly said.  "We need to get somebody under par and we need the others to shoot 75 and under.  Everybody has to help."

While Talley carded identical 74's in both rounds Friday, she had a different take on both rounds, frustrated with her first round total and happy with her second round.

"The first round was frustrating because I wasn't doing anything I wanted to," Talley said. "I just wasn't thinking and was disappointed to shoot a 2-over.  But shooting a 2-over in the second round was better, especially because I was 3-over early and 4-over at one point.  I got some birdies and then played out the round well, which is good because the wind really picked up later in the day."

"Talley is working hard and playing consistent golf and doing her part to represent the Buffs well," Kelly added.

The Buffs also have two individuals taking part in the event, as Jamie Befort shot a two-round total of 156, the second-best total of the six individuals in action while Devin Dougherty shot a 167 seeing action as an individual, as well.

"Jamie shot a couple of rounds in the 70s (77-79)," Kelly said.  "She had a few bad holes, but if she can get rid of the few big number holes, she'll be much more consistent.  For her to break 80 twice in her second tournament traveling is a good sign.  Her hard work is paying off."

Action continues in the MountainView Collegiate Invitational Saturday with the final round, set to being with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.
