CSU Wins MountainView, Buffs Finish 11th

March 27, 2010 | Women's Golf

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Sophomore Emily Talley fell one stroke short of a share for the individual championship and the University of Colorado women's golf team finished tied for 11th here at its own MountainView Collegiate Invitational Saturday.  Colorado State defeated Texas Tech in a scorecard tiebreaker to claim the 12th annual championship.

The Rams and Red Raiders both finished with final three-round scores of 890, or 26-over par.  The first tiebreaker is the three-round score of the non-scoring golfer for each team, but they were also tied, as the Rams' Melissa Martin and the Red Raiders' Alex Gibson both finished with 42-over par scores of 230.  The Rams won based on the scorecards of the fourth finishers for each school's.

The scores remained tight through the final round, as the top six teams finished within eight strokes of each other, as UNLV took third with a score of 894, Baylor fourth with 895, Indiana fifth with a 896 and Iowa State sixth with a 898.  San Jose State led a second grouping of schools that included the next nine schools within 13 strokes.  The Spartans finished with a score of 908, followed by Brigham Young (909), while Gonzaga and Michigan were tied for ninth at 914 and Colorado and Missouri tied for 11th with 915.  Wisconsin was just one stroke back at 916 with Kansas State (920) and Northern Arizona (921) rounding out that grouping of schools.  Washington State (931), Sacramento State (937) and Boise State (964) then rounded out the field.

The individual scoring stayed as close as it had been the day before, with the top 38 golfers finishing within nine strokes of each other.  Texas Tech's Gabriella Dominguez and Missouri's Julia Potter shared the individual championship with three day totals of 3-over par 219.  A look at the scorecards couldn't determine an individual winner so the tournament committee determined there should be a co-championship.

Baylor's Hannah Burke and Talley tied for third just one stroke behind the co-leaders with a three-round score of 220, or 4-over par.  Colorado State's Casey Claussen and UNLV's Kristen Schelling tied for fifth just one additional stroke back at 221.

For Talley, it is her career-best finish and highest finish for the Buffs individually since last fall.  It is just the 24th top-three finish in school history.

"I knew that I was two strokes back headed into the day," Talley said.  "And I was playing with a girl who was a co-leader after the first day, so I kept my eye on her scores to judge where I was.  I had a good round, I got two birdies right off the bat and was 3-under at one point.  Later, I made it through some hard holes well and made some good pars."

Talley did three-put the final hole, not knowing where she stood individually.

"She put herself in a good position entering the day, just two strokes off the lead," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "She put herself in contention and even after a small rough patch, she rebounded, which is huge.  We have to get used to putting ourselves in that position.  She has been working so hard and I'm proud of her."

"I'm happy with where I finished but a little bummed that I three-putted the final hole and finished one stroke back," Talley added.

As a team, the Buffs dropped five spots in third round despite slashing five strokes off its second round score.  Christine Kim shot a final round 76 to finish 12-over in the tournament and tied for 34th with a score of 228.  Taylor Doyle shot a final round 77, one stroke better than her first two rounds, to finish with a three-round total of 233, tied for 58th.  Dominique Pytlewski finished one stroke behind Doyle, tied for 65th with a three-round total of 234.  Meaghan Kari finished the tournament with a 240 after a final round score of 79, 7-over par.

The Buffs also had two individual players in the tournament.  Jamie Before finished 80th with a three-round total of 239 while Devin Dougherty finished tied for 92th with a score of 247.

The Buffs season finish out regular season tournament action in two weeks as they travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the Indiana Invitational on April 10-11.  The Buffs will then compete in the Big 12 Championships April 23-25 in Norman, Okla.
