Buffs Third After Two Rounds At Indiana Invite

April 10, 2010 | Women's Golf

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- All five Buffaloes scoring for the team shot within a stroke of each other, propelling the University of Colorado women's golf team to a tie for third place through two rounds here Saturday at the 2010 Indiana Invitational.

Colorado shot a spring-low 296 in the second round and is tied with Michigan as both squads posted two-round totals of 600, just one stroke behind second place Iowa State (599) and five strokes behind leader and host Indiana (595).  Illinois State (601) is just one stroke behind the Buffaloes and Wolverines in fifth place.  The Buffs score of 296 is the third-lowest team round of the spring and fourth-lowest of the season.

"It's nice to see everybody help and play better and contribute," CU coach Anne Kelly said. "I think this was the best team effort all spring."

CU's seniors both had up and down performances, both shooting the team's lowest score in one round and the highest in the other round.  Dominique Pytlewski had the best first round for CU, shooting a 1-over par 73, while Christine Kim shot an even par 72 in the second round.

"It was nice to see Domi break through with a good round," Kelly said. "She played the best she has all spring and everything came together for her in the first round. We made some equipment adjustments with her and she's definitely hitting her irons better."

Pytlewski also set a new CU career record for career rounds played.  She played in her 123rd and 124th career rounds Saturday, surpassing Maria Persson-Gulda, who played in 123 career rounds from 2005-08.

"I've been blaming myself and thinking I was just in a slump," explained Pytlewski, who shot her best round of the spring and second-best round of the season. "I felt like I was swinging well the whole time and it wasn't until (assistant) coach Brent (Franklin) noticed that something was up with my swing that we decided to change things up."

Kim rebounded from an 8-over par 80 in the first round to shoot even par in the second.  She began her second round with a double bogey, then fought back to par over the next 10 holes before getting a bogey and birdie late in the round.

"Christine really brought it back in the second round," Kelly said. "After the first round, I told her 'We have a chance to be in this tournament, but we need you.'  It's nice to challenge somebody and have her respond like she did."

Freshman Taylor Doyle had the Buffs best day by a stroke over her four teammates officially scoring for the team, as she carded a 7-over par 151 and is tied for 17th place.  Kim, Pytlewski, junior Stephanie Simich and sophomore Emily Talley all sit at 8-over par and are tied for 25th place.

"I really hit the ball well today," Doyle said. "I hit a lot of greens in regulation and when I didn't I was right on the fringe. The greens are difficult. I had trouble with my putts today, but it got better as the day went on."

Talley would've had the Buffs best day had it not been for a triple bogey early in her second round, carding an 8 on a par 5.  But she rebounded and had 10 straight pars before a birdie on her final hole.

"Emily had the eight," Kelly said. "But she's so competitive and that really made her mad.  She competed hard and I'm proud of her because it's sometimes hard to do that after a triple bogey."

Sophomore Jamie Befort, playing individually, is at 19-over par with a two-round total of 163 and is tied for 73rd place.

The Buffs finish out the Indiana Invitational, the final regular season tournament, Sunday with an 8:30 a.m. EDT shotgun start.  The Buffs confidence is high entering the final round.

"As a team sometimes we haven't been finishing strong, but today we did," Pytlewski said. "We're only a few shots out so we'll go out tomorrow and try to get a win. If we can get four people going at the same time it shouldn't be a problem."

"Tomorrow we just have to go out there confident," Doyle added. "We all had good rounds today, but not at the same time.  So if we put it all together, we have a chance to win."

Kelly acknowledged that it could be tough to knock off the home team on its home course with a five-stroke advantage, but thinks if the Buffs can play like they did Saturday and knock down a few puts, it could get interesting.

"It's hard to control wins and losses," Kelly said. "You control yourself and do the best to shoot low scores and at the end of the day, you add it up and see where you're at.  But if we hit some puts, we have a shot at winning this tournament."
