Golfers Finish 13th In Louisiana
March 09, 2010 | Men's Golf
No. 28 Louisiana State emerged from a three-way tie to win with an even-par 864 score, edging No. 13 Illinois by two shots and No. 72 Tulsa by seven; the Illini and Golden Hurricane were tied with the Tigers through 36 holes. No team caught fire in the final round, the best score posted by
This was an important tournament for the Buffaloes, who need to start finishing in the upper half of the field on a consistent basis to improve their chances for an NCAA berth. The main requirement is a .500 record, though strength of schedule does come into play;
“We played very poorly today, and let a bunch of teams pass us,” Edwards said. “I thought we made some progress yesterday, but we took a great big step back today, but with how we played and the way we did it, which is more disappointing than anything else.” CU had been as high as fifth after the opening round.
Senior Justin Bardgett led the Buffaloes here, tying for 21st with a 4-over 220 score after a final round 77 on the 7,141-yard, par-72 Oakbourne Country Club course layout. He played the par-4 holes at 1-over for the week, tied for 10th best. Sophomore Sebastian Heisele turned in CU's best score of the third round, a 3-over 75, to close at 8-over 223 to tie for 35th. He had one of the better tournaments on the par-5 holes, as he played the 12 to a 4.58 average, tied for third best in the field.
Sophomore Kevin Kring tied for 42nd with a 9-over 225 performance; he was looking for a top 20 finish after entering the day tied for 19th, but an 8-over 80 sidelined him from that track. He was stung by big numbers here, as he was fifth in par-3 scoring and tied for the seventh most pars with 39.
Junior Michael Imperato closed with a 6-over 78, giving him a 230 score which tied him for 62nd, and freshman Derek Fribbs topped off his play with a 7-over 79, his 232 total tying him for 71st.
“We need to make some significant changes and get to work the next couple of weeks to be ready for the spring break trips,” Edwards said. “We need make significant improvements to be in position to be competitive with the teams ahead of us on our schedule. We have to get better, and that's on my shoulders. We've got to make it happen as soon as possible and figure out how to do it, so that part is a challenge but can also be exciting. The problems are solvable and we'll get them fixed.”
Oakbourne was more challenging than usual due to the grass suffering from a hard winter. The course won all three rounds, particularly Tuesday, when only six players bettered par with six others matching it out of an 84-man field. The average score for the 252 rounds was 75.00, with the 75.57 for the third round the highest of the three 18s.
