Medina and Talley Earn CU Athlete of the Week Honors

BOULDER - Sophomores Richard Medina (track & field) and Emily Talley (women's golf) have earned CU athlete of the week honors for the week of April 5-11. This is the second career honor for both student-athletes, as well as the second time during the season they have garnered the award.
Medina, a native of Grand Junction, Colo. (Grand Junction), edged out teammate Joe Bosshard in the 1,500-meter run. Medina recorded a personal record of 3 minutes, 53.12 seconds while Bosshard ran 3:53.96 on the second day of the Colorado Invitational on Saturday. He had not raced at Potts Field since the 2008 Big 12
Championships when he finished fourth in the 5,000 and fifth in the 10,000-meter runs.
Talley, a Napa, Calif. (R.L. Stevenson) native, who was the Big 12 Golfer of the Month for March, continued her impressive play and was the Buffaloes most consistent golfer at the 2010 Indiana Invitational, helping the Buffs to a season best second place finish, the top spring finish for the program in three years. Talley ended up tied for 15th individually, shooting a 7-over par 223 for the tournament. She carded a 1-under par 71 in the final round to secure her fourth consecutive top 20 finish and sixth of the season. Her under par round gives her five for the season, tied for third all-time, and was the ninth of her career, which ties her for the second-most in CU history. Her six top 20 finishes are tied for the fourth most in CU history while her 12 career top 20 performances ranks sixth all-time. Her string of four consecutive top 20 finishes is tied for fourth in CU history and she's the only golfer in the program's history to have two streaks of four tournaments or longer with top 20 finishes.
Others nominated for this week's award were: Sebastian Heisele (men's golf), Emma Coburn (track & field) and Abbie Probert (women's tennis).
Men's Golf: Sebastian Heisele, Sophomore, Dubai, UAE
Heisele tied for fourth individually in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, his best finish in a major tournament in his collegiate career, in leading Colorado to a fourth place team finish. He recorded an even-par 70 in the final round for a 1-over 211 for 54 holes on the 7,133-yard, par-70 Talking Stick Golf Club North Course layout. He opened with rounds of 68 and 73. Heisele had the second most birdies in the 130-man field with 11, and was third in overall par 4 scoring, playing the 36 collective par 4's at 2-under. "This was one of those courses that worked very well for me," Heisele said. "A wide open course open course where I didn't have to worry about where I placed the ball, and with big greens, I had a bunch of driver-wedges here so overall it played fairly easy for me. There was a lot of wind, and we were still at what, 1,000 feet (elevation), so the ball flies and flies when the wind was at your back."
Track & Field: Emma Coburn, Sophomore, Crested Butte, Colo.
Coburn led the charge for the women in the 800-meter run at the Colorado Invitational. She finished in 2:10.61 to become the seventh fastest performer in CU history and was just ahead of teammate Laura Thweatt (2:11.35) to become the eighth best performer. Coburn bettered her previous personal record in the event (2:14.43) by almost four seconds.
Women's Tennis: Abbie Probert, Junior, London, England
Probert won a total of four matches over the weekend (two singles, two doubles) helping the Colorado tennis team to a 2-0 week with wins over Kansas (6-1) and Kansas State (4-3). The London, England native, clinched CU's come-from-behind victory over Kansas State defeating Nina Sertic, 6-4, 7-6(8). The Buffs trailed by a 3-1 deficit. In doubles, she teamed with Michala Hedelund Jensen at No. 2 to defeat K-State's Sertic/Chuda, 8-5. Against, KU, Probert rallied herself from a pair of 3-0 deficits in each set to defeat Maria Martinez, 6-3, 7-5. Earlier in the day, Probert and Hedelund Jensen clinched the doubles point acing the winning serve in the tie-breaker victory over Dorn/Lazarevic, 9-8(2). Probert and Hedelund Jensen are unbeaten against the Big 12 at the No. 2 doubles position (3-0).
