Golfers Tie For Fourth At Wyoming Cowboy Classic
April 06, 2010 | Men's Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team posted its second best finish of the season in 11 tries as the Buffaloes tied for fourth here Tuesday in the 8th Annual Wyoming Cowboy Classic.
Cal-State Northridge took over the second round lead and then posted the best final round score, a 5-under 275, to finish up with an 841 team total, or 1-over par. No. 25 San Diego grabbed second with an 850 score, with Western Carolina snaring third at 854. Big 12 Conference colleagues and rivals Colorado (No. 90) and Oklahoma (No. 78) tied for fourth with 856 scores, or 16-over par.
The second round was completed early Tuesday morning, as most teams still had between one and three holes to complete after Monday's play was suspended due to darkness. When all was said and done, only one team in the field of 24 shot better in the second round than the first?New Mexico State?jumping from 17th to eighth in the standings. Colorado shot 16 strokes worse in the second round, but only slipped from second place, four shots out, to a tie for fifth, and eight out of the lead.
“We started off pretty good, we were 4 or 5 under after he first 10 or 11 holes, but struggled a little bit in the middle of the round,” head coach Roy Edwards said. “But we had all five guys playing fairly well so we put up a respectable score despite some troubles here and there. I'm proud of the guys, the winds really picked up for the last two rounds here but we pretty good at dealing with it. The winds definitely ate a few teams up.”
The high score of the day for CU was a 4-over 74, the lowest score posted by the fifth scorer all season, another good sign for the coaching staff.
Sophomore Sebastian Heisele tied for fourth individually, his best finish in a major tournament in his collegiate career, as he recorded an even-par 70 in the final round for a 1-over 211 for 54 holes on the 7,133-yard, par-70 Talking Stick Golf Club North Course layout. Heisele had the second most birdies in the 130-man field with 11, and was third in overall par 4 scoring, playing the 36 collective par 4's here at 2-under.
“This was one of those courses that worked very well for me,” Heisele said. “A wide open course open course where I didn't have to worry about where I placed the ball, and with big greens, I had a bunch of driver-wedges here so overall it played fairly easy for me. There was a lot of wind, and we were still at what, 1,000 feet (elevation), so the ball flies and flies when the wind was at your back. Unfortunately, we lost a lot of shots on the back nine as it was completely differently oriented than the front nine because everything was upwind. Otherwise, I think we would have had a chance to win the tournament had we been able to hold it together.”
Senior Justin Bardgett tied for seventh overall, wrapping up the meet with a 1-over 71 for a 2-over 212 total. He had eight birdies over the three rounds and played the par-3s collectively at 1-under, seventh best in the field. Freshmen Derek Fribbs posted his collegiate best finish, tying for 36th, as a final round 73 gave him an 8-over 218 total, also his best 54-hole college best.
“Sebastian played pretty solid overall, and had a great birdie on his way in on No. 18, his seventeenth hole of the day, which is a pretty tough finishing hole,” Edwards added. “Justin was solid, Derek had his best tournament, so we had a lot of good things happen here. We're definitely improving and that's encouraging. We just need to keep getting better and we're already looking forward to our next tournament. Hopefully we can do some damage there and go into the Big 12 Championships with a lot of momentum.”
Sophomore Kevin Kring turned in CU's best score in the final round, a 2-under 68, to finish up at 10-over 220 to tie for 48th. After opening with an 8-over 78, he played the last 36 at just 2-over and was 3-under on the par-5s, fourth best in the field. Junior Michael Imperato rounded out the Buff contingent, closing with a 4-over 74 for a 222 score, tying him for 60th.
Colorado led the field in par-4 scoring as a team (+22), was seventh for the par-5s (even) and seventh for the par-3s (+11). The Buffs had the second most birdies (38) and the 11th-most pars (169); figures include all five players, not just the four scorers.
San Diego's Gunner Wiebe, the son of Denver resident and Champion Tour member Mark Wiebe, shot a final round 66 to finish at 7-under 203, good for a two shot win. Wiebe was the only player in the field to record more birdies than CU's Heisele, as he registered 13. CSU-Northridge's Jeff Freund was two back at 205, as he was the only player to post all three of his rounds in the 60s.
Colorado will return to action April 17-18 in the Texas Aggie Invitational, the final tune-up ahead of the Big 12 Championships the following week.
