Bosshard Advances To 10k Finals
May 27, 2010 | Track and Field
AUSTIN, Texas ? University of Colorado freshman Joe Bosshard earned his first trip to the finals of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship after placing seventh in the semifinals of the 10,000-meter run on Thursday night at the NCAA West Region Preliminary Championship.
Bosshard, who was ranked 38th in the region heading into the race, put himself in a great position to advance after moving into second place in the 10k behind Tulsa's John Beattie with 2k remaining in the race. The lead pack was tight with 15-17 runners staying close together. Bosshard fell back to fifth with six laps remaining, but was able to stick with it and move on. His final time was 29 minutes, 40.29 seconds. Oklahoma State's John Kosgei, who took the Big 12 crown two weeks ago, won the race in 29:36.55.
Teammate Andy Wacker missed advancing to the finals when he took 15th overall. He recorded a time of 29:57.20. Aldo Vega was 21st (30:19.73) and Jordan Kyle finished 32nd with a time of 31:03.98.
“It was a good run for Joe Bosshard tonight,” head coach Mark Wetmore said. “He waited to make his move since the race was very slow and hot; it was probably about 86 degrees during the race. He got to the front of the pack and was able to stay there and closed quite well. Andy Wacker also had a nice run although he did not advance.”
On the women's side, Laura Thweatt recorded a 34th-place finish after clocking a time of 36:18.64. Iowa State's Lisa Koll won in 34:23.65.
Sprinter Jeremy Dodson advanced to the quarterfinals in the 100-meter dash after recording his second fastest time of season at 10.38 seconds to take second in his heat. He finished just behind USC's Ahmad Rashad who clocked a time of 10.30. Dodson's time was the eighth best time of the day. The quarterfinals will be contested on Friday at 6 p.m. CST. He will also run in the first round of the 200 at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
“I'm pleased with Jeremy in the 100,” Wetmore said. “He had a good race to advance to the next round and he is good to go for tomorrow.”
Brianne Beemer did not advance to the quarterfinals in the 400-meter hurdles after running a time of 1:01.60. She finished sixth in her heat to record her third fastest time of the year in the event. Texas A&M's Andrea Sutherland won the heat in 58.47 with the fourth best time of the day.
"Bri ran a very solid 400 hurdles race,” assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. “I am proud of her efforts, her season and the way she competed at her first NCAA championships qualifying round. She competed well and moved up another nine places from where she was ranked coming into this meet. For Bri to be able to compete in the 400 hurdles at this level while scoring in the Big 12 as a heptathlete speaks highly of her abilities and overall development. She is an absolute joy to coach and I greatly look forward to what she will be able to accomplish next year."
The NCAA Preliminaries are the first step in a new process to quality athletes for the NCAA Championship June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore. There are two championship preliminaries (west and east) this weekend and the top 12 competitors at each site will advance to the national championship. The meet runs through Sunday, May 29. Live results and a live stream of the event are available at texassports.com.
