Soccer Defeats Northern Colorado, 2-0
August 29, 2010 | Soccer
BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team battled the University of Northern Colorado to a 2-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field.
Colorado improves to 2-0, its best mark since a similar start in 2002. The Bears dropped their second game of the season, falling to 2-2.
After a scoreless first half, it was apparent that both teams' defenses were controlling the game. In the first 45 minutes, Colorado's offense only attempted five shots while Northern Colorado only attempted three.
"We weren't very dangerous for as much as we had the ball in the first half," head coach Bill Hempen said. "That's one of the things we talked to them about at halftime. We said, 'You guys, for all of our possessions, we aren't really getting anything out of it.' So, we actually changed formation a little bit to be a little more attack oriented."
The tempo of the game increased in the second half as both teams tried to get on the scoreboard.
In the 61st minute, Caroline Danneberg made her way down the left sideline. Just outside of the goal box, she sent a perfectly timed crossing pass to Kym Lowry who was sprinting down the middle. Lowry met the ball just in time to send it over the out-stretched arms of UNC goalie Kirstin Salminen, for the first score of the match.
"A strong part of our (offense) is running down the field and getting crosses in, so I think we just try to take advantage of that every game and see how it goes," Danneberg said. "And (Lowry) does a great job of getting in every time."
"(The goal) felt so good," said Lowry. "We really needed to score."
Similar to last week's game against Wyoming, Lowry found herself assisting on a second CU goal after recording the initial score of the match. She took the ball down the right sideline and crossed it to Amanda Foulk who was near the top-left of the goal box. Salminen ran out to defend the shot, but fell just as Foulk sent the ball past her and into the bottom right side of the net with just under five minutes to play.
Lowry has recorded the game-winning goal in both contests this season and has a team-leading six points. She and Danneberg each have a team-best two assists.
Freshman goalkeeper Annie Brunner logged her second win, and second-straight shutout, stopping all three UNC shots on goal.
The Buffs travel to Denver to take on the host Pioneers in the first game of the DU Invitational Tournament Saturday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. CU will play either Drake or UNLV on Monday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. for their final game of the tournament.
