Golfers Fall In Second Annual State of Colorado Cup
September 13, 2010 | Men's Golf
HOLYOKE ? The University of Colorado men's golf team held a one-point lead after morning play, but watched its rival Colorado State Rams rally in afternoon singles action to win the second annual State of Colorado Cup, 5?-4?, here Monday at the Ballyneal Golf & Hunt Club.
“It was certainly great to be out at Ballyneal, and it was a great test of golf to start the season, but as a team, we're all very disappointed in losing,” said CU head coach Roy Edwards. “Our expectation was to win, and we didn't do that. We fortunately have a tournament in five days, and to put it in perspective, we only lost to one team. But we'll have five or six more chances this year to beat (CSU) and need to have this loss motivate us to keep getting better.
“We have a really good group of guys and they understand it, so I think we'll get that done.”
The Buffaloes won two of the three Four-Ball matches, with the senior tandem of Michael Imperato and Luke Symons posting the most impressive win of the day's 10 pairings, defeating CSU's Kory Harrell and Scott Newton, 5 and 4.
CU's lone newcomer, sophomore Australian recruit Pat Wilson, defeated one of three Ram newbies, freshman Jackson Giro, 1 up in singles play. Most of the singles matches ended around the same time, so unlike last year when it came down to the final hole in the last remaining match, there was no real excitement at the finish. But when the smoke cleared, only junior Sebastian Heisele, a winner over CSU senior Ryan Petersen by a 4 and 3 score, joined Wilson as winners in singles play. CSU won four of the other five matches, with the remaining one halved between CU junior Kevin Kring and Richard Schneider.
The Buffs resume action this weekend in the annual Air Force Falcon-Gene Miranda Invitational in Colorado Springs, held at USAFA's prestigious Eisenhower Blue Golf Course.
