Boilermakers Upend Buffs, 3-1

September 17, 2010 | Soccer

BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team fell to Purdue University 3-1 in the Omni Hotels Colorado Soccer Classic Friday afternoon at Prentup Field.

After a physical battle, Purdue improved to 4-4-1 on the season as CU dropped below .500 to 3-4 overall.

"We came out strong and then just made mental errors," said head coach Bill Hempen.

The Buffs entered the game with high intensity and netted their first goal early, but something fell apart as the game continued.

"A lot of it was disorganization all over the field and that occasionally happens," Kate Russell said. "I thought we looked good in the beginning, but time went on and they didn't let down as we did take our foot off the gas."

The Buffs' early goal proved they really did have their 'heads' in the game. Russell's corner kick ricocheted off Amy Barczuk's head, which sent the ball high into the air. On its way down, Amanda Foulk connected with a header of her own and blasted the ball into the back of the net just 6:47 into the contest.

Foulk's goal brings her season total to two, which ties her with Kym Lowry and Hayley Hughes at the top of CU's scoring chart.

Despite Colorado's quick start, the Boilermakers' intensity grew fast.

At the other end of the field, a corner kick opportunity gave the Boilermakers their first goal at 24:27. Kellie Phillips delivered the ball to Katie Leinert who sent the ball directly past CU goalie Annie Brunner on a header.

Purdue's kept up the pressure as its second goal came just under three minutes later in the 27th minute. After assisting on the first goal, Phillips found herself on the scoring end when she had possession in the center of the goal box about 10 yards out. There was a cluster of both black (Colorado) and white (Purdue) jerseys surrounding her, but she managed to shoot the ball just past a diving Brunner attempting the save.

The score remained 2-1 after the first 45 minutes of action.

Purdue capitalized after a change in possession late in the game to secure the 3-1 win as Liz Secue shot the ball from 25 yards out on the right side. The ball rolled past Brunner who had stepped out to stop the goal.

"That third goal was a turning point," Russell said. "I think some of us had the mentality of, 'We need to get back in the game,' and some of us had the mentality of, 'Oh crap, another goal.' We need to make sure that all over the field we are ready to step up to that challenge."

Regardless to the way the Buffs played today, Hempen is ready to take on No. 10 UCLA on Sunday.

"I'd just rather play UCLA on Sunday than anybody else just to see if we have any guts," said Hempen. "[It will] push us to another level that we have to be at in order to have a successful season and enter into one of the best soccer conferences in the country."

UCLA defeated Denver 4-2 in the first matchup of the Omni Classic. The Bruins' goals were scored by Sydney Leroux, Amelia Mathis, Ahsha Smith and Chelsea Cline, and Denver's goal scorers were Jessie Rogers and Kaitlin Bast.

The Omni Classic will continue at Prentup Field on Sunday, Sept. 19 as the Buffaloes take on their future Pac-12 Conference rival at 1:30 p.m. Denver and Purdue will play in the first game at 11 a.m. Parking and admission to CU home soccer games are free.
