Three Buffs Share Athlete Of The Week Honor

September 28, 2010 | General, Men's Golf, Soccer, Volleyball

BOULDER - For the second week in a row, CU honored three Athletes of the Week. Golf's Derek Fribbs, volleyball's Kerra Schroeder and soccer's Lizzy Herzl shared the title for the week of September 20-26. Herzl also earned the title last week.

Fribbs, a sophomore who attended Douglas County High School in Castle Rock, Colo., had a strong showing in CU's opening tournament of the season. He led the Buffs in the Air Force Falcon Gene Miranda Invitational, piloting the Buffs with a 5-over par performance. His scorecard for the tournament was 75-71-75 for a three round total of 221. The Buffs finished 25th overall in the invitational.

Behind the reins of Schroeder, the CU volleyball team won its first two Big 12 matches of the season. The Buffs played a tough Kansas State team on Wednesday and aggressive Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday. Against Kansas State, the sophomore had a career day: she spiked a career high 24 kills (which also led the Big 12 for the week) and earned a career personal best 25.5 points. She contributed 12 digs and three block assists while holding a .327 hitting percentage in a five-set battle against the Wildcats.

Against Kansas, Schroeder again hit the 20-kill plateau earning 21, marking the fourth time this season she has reached 20 kills. She also added two aces, 11 digs and a block assist to give her a grand total of 23.5 points against Kansas. Both games were double-doubles from Schroeder.

Schroeder's performance helped the Buffs land their first back-to-back conference wins since 2008 when Colorado beat Texas Tech away before coming home and upsetting against No. 2 Nebraska.

After making her presence felt last week, Herzl again came up big for the Buffs with a solid performance in overtime. After scoring a double-overtime goal against then-No. 10 UCLA last week, Herzl, a freshman, did the same against No. 6 ranked Texas A&M. This double-overtime win was the first for CU in College Station, Texas, the Buffs final appearance there before moving on to the Pac-12 next year. Her goal scored last week was only off of her third collegiate shot, and she is now tied with most goals this season with two and both have come in double-overtime over top-10 ranked teams.

Tennis' Carla Manzi Tenorio was also nominated this week:

Manzi Tenorio notched her first collegiate wins this weekend when Colorado hosted the University of Denver and New Mexico State University in the three-day Colorado Invitational. Manzi Tenorio was a part of three doubles victories when she paired up with another freshman, Winde Janssens, and two singles wins.
