
Tennis Opens 2011 with Win over Air Force

COLORADO SPRINGS - The University of Colorado women's tennis team won the all-important doubles point then secured three of six singles slots to defeat the United States Air Force Academy, 4-3, Friday evening.
The Buffaloes (1-0) opened the spring season having never lost to the Academy (0-1) in 12 matches, received singles wins from sophomore Erin Sanders, junior Michala Hedelund Jensen, and freshman Kristina Schleich.
"Tonight's match was a good start for us," CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. "We had great effort from the team. We had some players pick up valuable wins and we continue to work on the areas that need improving. We look forward to Sunday's match against Boise State."
With a 1-0 lead taking two of three doubles points, CU then took the next three singles slots for a commanding 4-0 lead and secured victory. Schleich swept Sarah Cassman, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4; Sanders, playing the No. 1 slot for the first time in her career defeated Christen Monreal, 6-4, 6-2; then Hedelund Jensen clinched the match defeating Hannah Dake 7-5, 6-2.
In doubles, Hedelund Jensen and Abbie Probert were the first ones off the court as they defeated Tahlia Smoke and Melissa Cecil, 8-4 at No. 1; and No. 3 Schleich and Carla Manzi Tenorio clinched the point edging Cassman and Voight, 8-5.
Probert's doubles win on Friday improves her career total to 57 victories moving into eighth place on the school's all-time doubles list. She also picked up her 38th career spring win.
The CU women return to the court on Sunday with their home opener against No. 38 Boise State. The match with the Broncos is the first of 11 home matches for the Buffs this season.
Sunday's match begins at The Meadows Club in Boulder with doubles play at 9 a.m.
