Janssens & Wacker Claim Athlete Of The Week Honors

Janssens, a sophomore from Peer, Belgium, won three straight matches before falling in the quarter-finals at the 2011 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas this past weekend. She defeated Sasha Carter of Montana 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 128 players, Victoria Lozano of Idaho 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 64, and Jessica Parizher of Wyoming 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 32. She was ultimately defeated by No. 64 and top seed Anastasia Putilina of Utah, 1-6, 6-0, 0-6.
Janssens improved to a 5-2 record this fall and 9-4 in two fall seasons.
Wacker, a graduate student at CU, finished second overall at the 2011 NCAA Pre-National Invitational on Sunday afternoon. His time of 23 minutes, 58 seconds in the 8k race was just three seconds behind the leader. Wacker's finish helped the No. 8 CU men's cross country team win the invitational, and he best his time in the same event from last year (24:08 finish).
Also nominated this week are Shalaya Kipp (cross country), Kate Russell (soccer) and Kerra Schroeder (volleyball).
Kipp finished ninth at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational. Her time of 20:51 led the No. 4 Buffs to a fourth-place team finish, and she improved from her 12th place finish in the same event a year ago.?
Russell, a senior midfielder, scored Colorado's lone goal in CU's 3-1 loss to Oregon on Sunday. She has scored three goals (tied with Amy Barczuk for second most goals on the team), and has put up 34 shots this season. Russell was also named WhiteWave's homegrown hero this week.
Schroeder recorded 23 kills and 20 digs in CU's losses to Arizona and Arizona State. Against ASU, she recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs. She averaged 3.83 kills per set, 3.33 digs per set and 4.17 points per set over the weekend.
