Buffs Lose Rematch with UCLA

October 28, 2011 | Soccer

BOULDER - After a 1-0 double overtime upset by the Buffs last year, it was payback time for the Bruins as UCLA defeated Colorado 8-0 on Friday afternoon.

The game began evenly matched with neither team gaining a close scoring opportunity. In the 10th minute, however, UCLA leading scorer Sydney Leroux received a pass from Caprice Dydasco in the middle of the CU box. After forcing Colorado keeper Kayla Millar to the right, she took a soft touch to the left and was able to pass the ball into the net to give her team a 1-0 lead. Millar made her third start in goal for Colorado with Annie Brunner still injured.

Two minutes later, sophomore Chelsea Stewart (who played high school soccer with CU's Hayley Hughes) hit a cross from 40 yards out on the right side to a sprinting Leroux who was able to hit the ball into the goal. It would be her 12th goal of the season and would give UCLA an early 2-0 lead.

Jenna Richmond made it a 3-0 game for the Bruins in the 16th minute with Stewart and Ally Courtnall assisting on the goal.

UCLA continued to make scoring opportunities, but Millar made some big saves to keep her team within reach. Minutes after the third goal, Millar came out to the tip of her box to cover a ball being rushed by Leroux. A few minutes later, CU freshmen Carly Bolyard and Storie Ledger combined for some nifty passing that led to a hard shot on goal for the Buffs. Katelyn Rowland was able to make the save for the Bruins.

UCLA found itself deep in the Colorado zone again in the 23nd minute. Freshman Sam Mewis scored her fourth goal of the season on an unassisted shot deep inside the Colorado box to put the game at 4-0.

Leroux finished a hat-trick in the 29th minute and put the game at 5-0 going into halftime. Still, the Buffs stayed strong. Erin Bricker had a scoring chance after beating UCLA's defense to the ball. Stewart was barely able to clear it, and prevented a close scoring chance for the Buffs.

Colorado appeared to gain a new energy with two minutes remaining in the half when Kate Russell booted a corner kick for CU. This led to a shot by Anne Stuller who started the game at defense. Stuller leads Colorado in shots with 46, and is one of the top shooters in the Pac-12.

"Many of our weaknesses were exposed," CU head coach Bill Hempen said. "We were standing. [UCLA] was running by us, and we're trying to catch them."

The Buffs would go into halftime down, but they came out hard to start the second half with a couple of adjustments. Stuller moved back to offense for the second 45 minutes to provide some more scoring chances for Colorado. She would lead the team with two shots during the game.

UCLA continued to battle, however, and with just under 33 minutes remaining, Richmond scored her second goal of the afternoon. Charney Burk and Courtnall made some quick passes in the box forcing Millar to come out. Richmond was able to sneak wide and was able to pass the ball into the goal to put the Bruins up 6-0.

After her two assists, Cournall earned a goal after she took a soft touch behind a CU defender and hit it past Millar to put the game at 7-0, UCLA.

Colorado continued to show heart and gained control of the ball just minutes later. Russell was able to get a hard shot on goal on a pass from Darcy Jerman. Alana Munger replaced Rowland for the second half, and made the save. Then, with just under 20 minutes remaining in the game, Amy Barczuk drove the ball hard into the box before being brought down. The fans were calling for a penalty shot, but it instead, it earned the Buffs a corner kick.

With 12 minutes left in the game, junior Chelsea Cline scored an unassisted goal to put the Bruins up 8-0.

The Golden Buffaloes put up a hard fight, but it was disappointing nonetheless.

"There were no fouls in the first half on either team," Hempen said. "It was like a glorified scrimmage for UCLA, and that's my fault. It was very disappointing."

Colorado will no doubt be hungry when they come out on Sunday. Colorado will face USC for its final home game of the season. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.
