Buffs Second At Edean Ihlanfeldt Invite

October 03, 2011 | Women's Golf

SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Sophomore Alex Stewart was the only golfer in the field under par as the No. 17 University of Colorado women's golf team sits tied for second and one shot behind the leader after Monday's first round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, held here just east of Seattle at the Sahalee Country Club.

In a Pac-12 dominated leader board, Oregon State holds the lead after shooting a 10-over par 298 with the Buffaloes and No. 16 California both tied one shot back at 11-over par 299.  No. 34 Oregon sits in fourth place, two strokes back at 13-over par 301 and host and No. 21 Washington rounds out to the top five at 15-over par 303.  There are 12 teams in the field with six from the Pac-12, including the top five.

“In all it was a good day,” CU head coach Anne Kelly said. “Alex had a really good today and Jenny (Coleman) and Kristin (Coleman) both played solid rounds.  Jess (Wallace) and Emily (Talley) both struggled a little bit.  Emily played well on the back nine.  We just all need to continue tomorrow and a few need to step it up a bit.”

The Sahalee Country Club course is in a 6,003-yard, par 72 setup for the event.  A championship level course, it played host to the 1998 PGA Championship won by Vijay Singh.  It also played host to the 2010 U.S. Senior Open, won by Bernhard Langer.

“This is a great golf course,” Kelly said. “It's along the lines of the Broadmoor.  It's probably one of the best courses I've seen our team ever play on.  It's old and historic and has a lot of tradition with PGA Championships and the Senior Open last year.”

Stewart shot a 2-under par 70 with three birdies and a bogey.  She holds a two-stroke advantage over a pair of golfers tied at even par.  She shot 2-under on the front nine with birdies on the 341-yard, par 3 No. 3 and 181-yard, par 2 No. 9.  She also birdied the 18th, a 455-yard par 5.  It marks her second round under par this season.  She was battling an illness last week at the UNM/Dick McGuire Invitational and finished in 48th place.

“I'm feeling a lot better,” Stewart said. “It's a 180-degree turnaround from last week.  I thought I did well today; I was driving really well and hit all my fairways.  That really helped, it gave me opportunities to birdie.”

Sophomore Jenny Coleman finished her round at 3-over par 75 and is tied for 12th.  She rebounded to get a birdie on the 16th after consecutive bogeys to bring her card back to 3-over.  Sophomore Kristin Coleman finished one stroke behind her sister at 4-over par 76 and is tied for 14th.  She birdied the first hole on her way to shooting 1-over on the front nine and shot a 3-over par on the back nine.

Talley struggled on her front nine, shooting 6-over par with six bogeys and three pars and then rallied to shoot even par on the back nine to finish with a 6-over par 78 in 32nd and had a bogey and birdie on back-to-back holes with seven pars.  Wallace also shot 6-over on her front nine and had a rare triple-bogey on the second hole.  She settled down and shot a 2-over par on the back nine to finish 8-over par 80 and is tied for 39th, marking the first round of her career at CU where she wasn't in the 60s or 70s.

Oregon's Cassy Isagawa and Oregon State's Anicia Yoo are two strokes behind Stewart at even par and tied for second place.  There is then a four-way tie for fourth with Gonzaga's Victoria Fallgren, California's Joanne Lee, Nebraska Madison Shells and Washington's Brittany Tallman.

Play continues Tuesday and will conclude Wednesday in the second-to-last fall event for the Buffaloes.
